Re: Yaesu betting on C4FM for AR
Low cost DMR radios are probably going to make DMR the dominant mode over time. A little over $100 is all that you need for a basic radio that works. The imports may not be as " ham-sexy" as a high tier Motorola, but they are ideal for experimenting and getting your feet wet in a newer, no...

Re: Wattage output versus tx range ?
Old school thoughts - you need 6db power increase to achieve a 3db signal increase at the receiver. Usually you need at least 6db (4x) power increase to get a noticeable change in received signal quality. Square law... A 3db increase in TX output power, plus a 3 DB gain antenna, plus cleaning up tra...

Re: Narrowband - why does Motorola specs imply deafer radio?
It's been over 30 years since I was in radio engineering classes, but if I recall, if you decrease your FM modulation index by holding you max modulating frequency and decrease your deviation, doesn't that have an adverse effect on SNR? True, your bandwidth decreases, but so does the relative amount...

Re: Whats the point of buying a 110w radio?
IMHO, going from a 50 to 110 watt radio in and of itself is not a big improvement as far as improving coverage. That being said, if you buy a 3db improvement in output power, and couple it with low loss feed line, and a 3db gain antenna on both the transmitting and receiving side, now you have a 9 d...

Re: Simplex Low Band portable coverage
It would depend on the antenna and the terrain. Low band has very poor penetration into any steel reinforced structure, so if you are in an urban environment, don't expect much. Helical antennas aren't that great on low band. Some loaded telescoping antennas might do a little better. In rural enviro...

Infinite key retention is enabled. The key loss phenominum occurs just once within a few days of loading a new codeplug. After re-loading the keys, they are not lost until a few days after the next time the codeplug is updated. It could be months between codeplug updates.

Your 5/8 high band antenna is close to being an electrical 1/4 wave on 6 meters. You will couple a lot of energy into the 5/8 high band while talking on low band, which is probably taking out your front end on the high band radio.
