I am going by the OEM remote kit instruction manual for that style radio, it does not break down between the 4550 and the 4580..

The OEM remote kit shows 1.04 firmware is required; I think. Interestingly enough I have remoted a new out of the box XPR4580 w/ 1.00 firmware and had no issues..

No .......It will give you a "fail 01/90".
Much like other models the radio "talks" to the control head, when it see's the wrong model than what the harware is programmed for then it does not know how to "talk" to it.

This is not a spectra, the radio has no Idea its remoted... The only issues you ...

The model 2/3 kits can usually be found new on Ebay for about $150. The head cable is the same with the exception you will not have any external speaker connections for the speaker. Yes, they do or at least did a couple of years back offer a civilian model that has a column mounted shifter and no console.

Thanks all, that was my feeling also, but wanted to get others feedback.

Jim, yes the antenna is mounted on the trunk and the radio (remote MSC 2000) is mounted under the package tray.
