Because with 110W, who cares if the repeater is down? Just drive for somewhere "high enough" and you'll be heard for miles around.

That's PA as in Pennsylvania. Does anyone know anything about these units? It appears to be a 10.7 MHz IF radio with a squelch hybrid and a tone detector, with a Mitrek preselector and channel element. How was it used? What was part of the installation or set? It just appears to be a stand-alone rec...

Short answer on the output issue: 100 uF capacitors on both audio leads in series with the audio path.
From the Saber +5V bus to the Option sel connector, there is a 20 kohm resistor in between.

So I did it and it works. Four 10F 2.7V capacitors from eBay later, I have them installed in a off-brand battery along with some foam so the battery contacts don't fall inside. I destroyed the thermistor by accident, so I replaced it with a 10K resistor. Other batteries I had handy were showing 9.96...

Re: Whats the point of buying a 110w radio?
Preamps lead to front-end overload, front-end overload leads to AGC limiting, mixing products, etc. For a repeater site on a hill without much of anything in the neighborhood, that's not a bad idea. But if there's anything within five miles, the preamp will need cavity filters itself, not to mention...

With the adapter installed, the Saber still uses internal audio unless a headset is attached, and then it uses external audio. Of course, when keyloading it emits the 1KHz tone from the internal speaker on "PASS". Motorola radios typically use electret microphones; I don't know at what sta...

The point of buying a 110W radio... 1) Motorola got into a power war with somebody years ago and 2) someone became convinced that 110W was the only way to go. 3) 110W with a dipole/quarter-wave ("Kulrod", 0dBd) antenna is a 110W ERP 4) Equal in ERP to 50W with a +3dBd antenna gain (as prov...

Bad PA modules were a common drain in that line. The other thing is that any secure-capable radio equipped with a crypto module will draw power to keep the key alive, even if no key is loaded. This is because the zeroize function requires it; if there is no power, the key is lost, which eliminates t...

The magic for a 120 degree sector is a 15 or 30 degree negative anhedral angle on the reflector, if you're looking down the top of the antenna. The NMO27C and the NMO50 are designed to cover single bands and will not work on others (unlike a simple 5/8th-wave 2m antenna, which is almost like a 1/4-wave at 50MHz). You're going to have to have an antenna wire run in the armored vehicle to get outside for the repeater. Or put the repeater in a non-armored vehicle.
