I should have marked this thread closed, the issue was the flex cable inside the control head was only connected on one end. The control head was NIB, so apparently this one slipped through Quality Control.

After plugging the cable in the head is now working fine

That is my best guess on why the radio is not recognized, strange that it worked on my Windows 98 computer for years and then stopped working when I upgraded. Gotta love the big M's - Microsoft and Motorola..

To the best of my knowledge, the PROM chips used to program these Syntor X radios are no longer available. That was why I mentioned the add on board that will allow programming the radio via a computer for the frequencies you may need. I forget who makes them. But that shouldn't be too hard to find...

I have the 259 version, works great from HF to VHF.
The only gotcha that I have ever had with it is that it is useless if you are trying to field tune an antenna that is in a high RF environment.

Check the internal fuse on the power supply board. Mine blew and did the same thing - would run off of dc but not AC replaced it and it has been running great for several years.

The 1504 will need a new set of cables made up to take it down to 440 mhz, the cans should be OK.

Mosy over to repeater-builder.com and look through the manuals for the T1504, looks like the loss will be 1.4 db on transmit, 1.4 db on receive (or 0.7 db per can)

I still have several of these in service, pretty decent units compared to what Zetron wanted for a comparable unit.

If you are running Windows go to Accessories then select calculator and the change to "scientific" under the view tab and it has a nifty hex to decimal conversion feature.

I am in the process of scanning one and it will be posted in the files section of the R1801 Yahoogroup in the next few days.

The manual covers the service / repair side of the R-1801, you will also probably need the instructions for each firmware / adapter application.

You will need the services of a frequency coordinator to move the transmitter site / increase power, etc.

You also will need to add narrowband emissions (11KOF3E) to the license before the end of the year.

I'll look, I may have a copy of the manual some where in the file cabinet.

IIRC all of the Pageboys were tone and voice only (no squelch circuit) so you won't be able to monitor with them and the tone elements for the GC tone sets might be difficult if not impossible to find.

When I look at the reference page in the software it list about 8 different cables.

What cable do I need to program a mid power XTL5000 with a W5 control head?

I would prefer purchasing the most versatile cable for future as my programming needs grow.
