Just use the tip of a mini-flat bladed screwdriver. Carefully pry a bit of the brown glue up and the rest will pull away enough to unsolder the crystal.

As stated above, a simple fix, replacing the caps on the final input PA. Always turn the power down to 25-30 Watts or less and you have the option to use it as a driver for a TPL-type PA replacement if you need the extra Watts.

It's easier to just take the mic apart and disconnect the black wire going to the rear weight contact and solder it to the pad that the spring connects to. This is presuming you have the black-style mic HMN3596A. Other mic styles would be along the same lines.

Future reliability...
Does all this extra work/future reliability worries = the cost of an OEM battery? If I was giving this to a customer, for instance, it would have a new OEM battery and fuggetaboutit.

I've had just a few filter crystals, either Y51A or B go out = very poor sens. Check your junk pile and substitute. Very easy to check with a RF millivoltmeter and input signal.

Sounds like the contacts going resistive with current flow. I've already heard about Chinese metal used in various parts (even truck engine parts) is not up to par. Hope that isn't the problem there.

PA's are Time Bombs At Full Power
Just had a 10 year-old GR500 repeater in for no Tx power and the PA was burnt up beyond recognition. Fortunately, having two GM300's in the box meant I could just swap, reprogram them, and reduce the power out to 30 Watts.
