I have seen many time issues where the slot lists are not in the right order and the subscribers can't follow the rest channel so most of the PTTs end up denied. I don't believe you can --- Subscriber to subscriber is a basic feature --
You can remove the Text Message Server (TMS) and keep it from trying to send text through a gateway -
You can also remove it from a programmable key, but not the Menu --

When you say I know I have the right package in my update folder. you do mean that you ran the install exe and in installed the components for the firmware upgrade .. MOTOTRBO_2.0_R020500_030011_Portable.exe << This is an install file and must be executed before loading the CPS and reading the radio .

We support Data messaging for a number of hotels with many SL-7550s with more being selected every day.. I have not heard of any issues and one of the properties is Capacity plus with all Sl-7550s an more than 25K data messages a month.
