Type of Antenna Connection on JEDI Series

Post by Jongage »

I want to attach an external antenna onto my MTS2000 so I can have some decent reception while working in the garage.

What is the type of connection that the antenna uses.......N, F,etc....

Thanks

Like Escomm said, there is a male SMA connector on the radio.
So you will need a female SMA connector on the line from the antenna.

I believe it's a SF connector, very similar to the SMA but slightly longer to more reliably engage the center pin. (It's close but I've had SMA's that did not contact the center pin). I've also seen it cataloged as 'Motorola length SMA'. Either way the SF to BNC-f adapter is available on EBay or if you have PayPal I can get one to you for $5.

Indeed, there are varying depths for the pin on various SMA connectors. I recently had an experience where by APX7K went deaf because a new antenna I installed had a female connector that did not quite reach the pin on the radio's antenna connector plug. One thing to look out for is the use of spacer washers that sometimes are furnished with a new antenna. In some cases the flexible washer will keep the antenna from screwing down far enough to make proper contact at the SMA connection.

I use a RF Industries RSA-3413. It has a long SMA threaded barrel to allow it the fully seat in the radio connector.

Some skirts on the SMA connector are too long, simply file the skirts down almost flush with the plastic insert, just do not file or grind so the center socket is hit, it will be destroyed.

The correct RF Industries part number is RFB1142-4. The SMA side is not recessed. The Motorola part number is 5880348B33 and costs about 6 times as much as the RF Industries part.
