Regency XL-2000 XLH 250B

Post by K7GDM »

I've been holding onto a Regency XL-2000 XLH 250B since taking it out of service in 1997. I'd like to tune it down to the 2 meter band but don't have a service or repair manual.

Does anyone monitoring this group have either a link, a hard copy, or a PDF or any software that would help me do so? I'll buy it for any reasonable price.

Years ago (aka. mid-1990's), there was a local tech at our GE-Ericsson dealer, who was quite adept at converting the older Regency/Wilson/Relm Radios over to the 2-meter ham band (144-148 MHz). After being re-tuned for 2-meters, the radio would lose some of its top end RX/TX, as these radios were not broad enough to cover both ham & commercial (i.e. 144-174 MHz).

There are other manufacturers of FPP or Front-Panel Programmable Radios:

Bendix-King Mobile & Portable Radios: Some radios support FPP, & would go below 148 MHz, via a modification, while others would not, depending on the version of the microprocessor installed in the radio. I once owned a LMH-3124 mobile radio, which easily covered 144-174, with no retuning. It only held 14 channels, but the receiver was triple-conversion, and never suffered from ‘intermod-type’ issues, when working near known offenders (a.k.a. +100 paging transmitters).

ICOM got into the mix with commercial portables that were FPP. Originally, I believe they had the IC-V16/U16 Series in the 1980’s, followed by the IC-F30LT/IC-F40LT Series in the 1990’s. These days they have the IC-F70DT/IC-F80DT Series, which has a dealer-mode, much like the radios of old, although some of the higher functions may require the computer software, in order to setup.

Kenwood has had several mobiles over the years, which were FPP. The TK-705D/TK-805D Series of radios comes to mind, because of their popularity. This is not only because of the FPP functionality, but also because they do not require any retuning, in order to cover the ham bands. Out of the box, they cover the ham & commercial bands very well. The TK-705D covers 138-174, while the TK-805D covers 438-470 MHz. The TK-705D/TK-805D Series even supports a VFO!

Motorola had several FPP portable radios over the years - the Waris Series, the Jedi Series (JT1000), & the XTS Series, just to name a few. With the JT1000, they came in both flavors - VHF & UHF. Some required a separate dongle to enter the programming mode, while the ‘government or federal’ version did not. While I’ve never had the occasion to test the UHF version of the JT1000, I own the VHF version. It covers the ham band, as well as the commercial band without any problems. My only gripes are the limited number of channels – 16, and the squelch closes with a crash, even with CTCSS/DCS enabled.

If you're hoping for broad-band coverage in a commercial radio, and still wish to retain the front panel programming ability, I'd stay with the newer radios, since the older ones were not nearly as wide-banded.

Back to your original question I did a little searching online, and here's what I could find, for your particular radio:

2. Regency xl2000/xlh 250 b

3. Wilson / Regency / Relm Programming

4. VHF Regency Help

With the commercial VHF & UHF Bands migrating over to narrowband technologies, I'm not sure what's in current production that still supports FPP, other than some of the high-tier /\/\ Gear.

Good Luck!

I'm sorry I didn't return your message, but I didn't see an email alert. Thank you for all your work. I've started the downloading and reading. I need to run but will take it up in a day or so.
