APX Audio

Post by ces911 »

Hi I am doing some research to buy a APX portable and looking for a APX model with very loud audio from speaker on front of radio. Anyone have any suggestions on the model I should look into..

APX7000 or 8000. They both have 1 watt audio output. The 6000 and 4000 are OK at 0.5 watt audio, but you have to crank up the volume almost all the way to get really loud audio on them. The 1 watt audio is impressive.

Isn't there a 3 watt audio driver option on those too???

APX portables and the XE RSM's are rated for 1 Watt, as gary says VERY loud for a portable!

The OP is specifically asking for audio from the front speaker of the radio, not an RSM (though you are correct, Gary, the XE RSM audio is very loud).
Jason, only the APX7000 and 8000 have 1-watt audio on the front speaker. The other APX models only has 0.5 watt.

Right, which you posted above (2X) also, we get it.

If I were researching, Id be interested in accessories also, so its all in good form of the thread.

And on the "other forum" we are waiting for tests to be conducted to see if swapping speakers will increase the volume, or if the 8000 has a louder RX audio amp vs the 6000. GARY

The OP stated nothing about accessories or RSM...he merely stated "speaker on front of radio", but my reply to your post wasn't pointing that out... it was to clarify your statement that APX portables are 1 watt audio when in fact not all of them are. I don't think you "get it" because if you read my original reply to the OP, it clearly delineated the difference. Do you "get it" now?

Yep...that's me who ordered the 8000 speaker and will test on my 6000.

ces911 above is correct. The 8000XE spec sheet says (twice...once in the paragraph description and once on the spec data list) that this radio has a 3 watt speaker. Now I have to pull out all of my APXs and play the sound game to check out the differences.

Wouldn't be the first time they've had a typo in the spec sheets. Take a look at the UHF2 audio output rating in the APX6000 spec sheet.

Always wondered why UHF 2 would be louder than the other band splits. LOL. GARY

I pointed out that typo on the 6000 spec sheet well over a year ago and they still haven't corrected it. I guess they don't care about misleading customers. The 3W speaker "typo" on the 8000 spec sheet is a whopper, though, as it's not "buried" in the spec charts like the 6000 UHF2 issue is... that typo is right there on page 2 under the new "Adaptive Audio Engine" section. I'm convinced their tech pubs and product managers (who are supposed to provide the info to Tech Pubs and then QA the draft PDF's before publishing) are a bunch of idiots.

Not only did they make that "3 watt" typo on the 8000 spec sheet, but they made the same typo on the 6000 enhanced (BN) and SRX2200 enhanced (BN) spec sheets. In fact, there's two errors on those ones... both those BN spec sheets still show 500mw speaker ratings in the spec chart in addition to the "3 watt" statement up in the feature section.

http://www.motorolasolutions.com/conten ... aSheet.pdf

These have got to be some of the dumbest tech writers and product managers I've seen.

I noticed both of those as well. I had Motorola send me updated brosures which I believe are corrected but they never posted online.

The ratings in the spec sheets are not 'speaker ratings', they are audio output power ratings. You can have a 3W speaker and a 500mW audio amp.
I believe the 3W/5W audio ratings shown in some specs may be instantaneous peak audio power, while the 500mW rating is RMS done with a sine wave.

In any case, do not confuse '3W speaker' with '3W audio output'.

Obviously correct and thanks for pointing that out to those who might not have been aware of that. I didn't elaborate as the brochure remarks listed both...'3-Watt speaker' (page 4) and 'Audio power at rated - 3 watt' (page 7). Implications were that this was another audio upgrade from the original .5 watt and 1 watt offered by its APX predecessors. 3 watts seemed like a lot from a portable, but M is doing great things with audio on both the mic and the speaker sides...things I wouldn't have anticipated a decade ago.

I trusted what the technical writers and their editing staff presented (oops).

I have confirmed with our engineering contact that the new BN 6000s have the same enhanced audio PA circuitry and speaker as the 8000. The AF of the 6000 has always been low, one of our agencies complained about this so their solution was to go out and buy IMPRES RSMs.

I assume that's the apx6000 enhanced model ?

Yup. I was under the impression that the AN version will be cancelled in the near future.
Too bad as we just took delivery of several hundred, if we only would have known. The BN version has WiFi, enhanced audio...

Will be interesting to see if any ANs that go into the depot under Service from the Start get replaced with BN hardware. This was the case in the late 90s and 2000s with Jedi radios. Always got "DN" capable RF board and controllers for legacy "AN" radios sent in for repair because AN hardware was cancelled.

Speaker arrived and I conducted a quick test.

Started with an APX6000 with factory speaker. I used a decibel meter and measured the dBA reading at various volume settings and took readings.
Open monitor (static) on a VHF frequency (using factory OEM APX/GPS antenna).

Repeated the same test after installing the APX8000 speaker in the same radio. Same dBA reading at the same volume knob levels.

Aside from the slight color variation, the speaker visibly looks to be identical to the APX6000 radio. It may very well be a 1W speaker vs. 0.5W, but the fact remains: the radio's PA only puts out 0.5W.

Anyone wanna buy a brand new APX8000 speaker for $40 shipped? :-)
