Motorola P500 portable ????

Postby Satelite » Thu Feb 16, 2017 6:37 pm

Hello:
I'm told Motorola made a conventional only portable called the P500.
What band was it for ?
I'm wondering if it was a 800 MHz or 900 MHz ?
Model number of the one I'm asking about is H25RFF51B4AN .
How many watts and channels and freq spread on this radio ?
Anybody know anything about It ?
Thank you

I seem to recall it being a Radius version of the MTX800 or 810. Privacy plus trunking. Not sure if it had conventional or not. It would be a 2 or 3 watt portable.

Hello:
Heres a few things ill add for consideration.
I have seen the Motorola p500 rss program manual on ebay and it definitely says conventional and no mention of trunking on the cover.
I did yesterday during an extensive search run into a post that told how to convert the Motorola P500 into the ham band and I saw 900 MHz freqs but right now don't recall the freqs spread it mentioned.
So ill try to find that post and site again.
I was leaning towards the Motorola P500 being a 900 MHz radio due to model number H25RFF51B4AN in that I'm thinking the first 3 characters H25 refered to a 900 MHz radio . (Yes or No whats others thought on that ?)
I'm certain years back I read the P500 was a conventional only a version of either a MTX or P200 or similar = only in I thought anyway all this time 900 mhz.
Did read a post where someone said it was a conventional without trunking but that it didn't sell well as many in that time period were on trunking systems so the P500 didn't fair well in sales .
Might explain why so little info on the p500 can be found.
I haven't been able to find much info on the Motorola P500 on the internet doing a several searches as its like its a rare item ?????
But I do stumble across info but cant confirm it with other info I find so it becomes very conflicting and not anything certain.
I did buy one of the rss p500 manuals and the Motorola model number above in a Motorola P500 and I do have the program cable as it uses the same cable as a P2000 / HT600 etc .
As for the program yeah well ive seen it around as of say 3 months back but never moved on it as I really didn't ever think id get the option to purchase a m p500 to use in the 900 ham band but I did just a few days ago .
But now I'm not sure what band it is or if the Motorola P500 was made in both 800 and 900 MHz even ???
Qeuss ill have to wait till the M P500 shows up and power it up and see what freqs are in it on the service monitor or see where it shows up on my spectrum analyzer as a quide.

From what I can find, it sounds like the P500 was a Genesis.
Cable listed was RTK4205.
RSS was RVN 4134A. In the 1996 portables book listed that RSS was for Radius line P100, P200, P210, P500. Which seems weird because I didn't think the P100 and the P200 used the same RSS. I have a LOT of experience with P200 and other Genesis radios. Hardly any with the P100.
Never heard of the P500 before.
But there are a couple obscure references in the parts book.
I ran up the P200LB and HT600 RSS, and both list that cable number for those radios in the help screens. A different cable was listed in the P200 RSS.
So, sure sounds like a Genesis. And if it were a Genesis, it seems a little less likely that it would have been for 900.
Hard to say tho.
Hear something new nearly everyday.

H25, the 5 indicates 800/900, so it's not specific to 900. If the second number was a 3 (H23), it would be VHD, a 4 (H24) would be UHF.

Hello:
Well that does make some sense on the 5 indicating 800 or 900 on this p500 radio as I'm finding references on postings talking about both 800 and 900 mhz.
I have a 2012 rss / cps listing on Motorola programs and on this list it does mention rss program RVH4134B not A dated 7-27-2001 release that was a combined rss program with other radios.
I also found a reference of what I'm thinking was the original p500 rss alone as HVN9941 dated 3-5-1991 I believe it was.
Motorola did combine the gp300 and p110 rss into one combo so I believe that maybe the case on the newer rss above.
The P500 rss program info manual does say conventional with no mention of trunking and that was my understanding from others that it was only conventional but when the radio shows up in the mail ill know for sure some of the answers but as of now I'm not willing to stand by much of the info I'm reading as many others say differently.

I have a Radius P500 in my collection... H25RFD51A3AN... 6 channels. It's an 800mhz P200 as far as I can tell with a Jedi-style antenna connector.

Hello:
Id agree from the picture of the P500 I bought but yet to receive in the mail that it does look like a P200 .
But talking to another here on the bd with a bit more info than I have he was sorta leading it to be a 800 MHz as the rss program manual shows 800 MHz freqs in the pictures as examples so that leads me to think its possibly just an 800 MHz radio.
I do have a rss programming info manual coming with the p500 radio so ill be able to look it over when radio shows up in the mail in next few days.
I was hoping the P500 was made in two band splits 800 and 900 MHz and that I had a 900 MHz model but I cant fins solid info to tell me that Motorola only made the P500 in 800 MHz only but I'm really at this time thinking that's the case 800 MHz model only until I find otherwise.
I was hopeful it was a 900 MHz but after talking with others I'm beginning to think its 800 MHz only with no 900 MHz model made.
Ill know for certain when it shows up as ill put it up against my service monitor and rf counter to see what its programmed for as a final clue.
I see yours is a RFD51A3AN where mines a RFF51B4AN = The one I have coming does have a DTMF pad so maybe that reflects the RFF or other part of the model number.
NSPD just out of curiousity - Are you using the P500 yet ?
What was the P500 used for by you if used ?
Do you know if for a fact the P500 is strictly conventional and no trunking ?
I do have one customer that is on a privately owned 800 MHz conventional analog repeater for the entire companies 7 locations with 3 conventional 800 MHz repeaters there legally licensed for so I have a place for the p500 to go and get used if by chance my 900 MHz wishes fall through- which I think already has just waiting to bawl cry and throw a tantrum when I confirm its 800 MHz only model :-) and not a coveted 900 MHz version.
Well maybe not but ill need a bud light to get over my high hopes .
Thank you

Someone on the board here was nice enough to give it to me since they knew I collected /\/\ gear but I have never used it and I don't know if it works. The battery is toast as are the rest of the Genesis radios in my collection.

Mine does not have a DTMF pad and just has a channel knob with 6 positions like a P200. Only external difference between this and a P200 I can see is the label and the antenna connector.

Based on the H25, this radio is UNQUESTIONABLY 800 or 900MHz. There is NO WAY it's VHF or UHF, I'm 110% certain of that.

Hello:
Well I'm bummed = wasn't what I was hoping the Motorola P500 portable would be.
Well heres the info I can confirm.
Motorola P500 model number H25RFF51B4AN is in fact a 800 MHz radio.
The P500 is not strictly conventional and does do trunking format along with conventional both.
However it does appear one could do 6 conventional no trunking by looking at the radio with rss program but I didn't try so wont qaranttee that.
Program did let me toggle all 6 trunking channels tp conventional but I didn't program it thus the reason I'm not going to say you can for sure but it does appear you can as the rss let me do it.
So as I see it you could do all trunking or all conventional only or a mix of both as you saw fit.
I used the exact program cable youd use to program the HT600 or P200 or the MTX series.
The P500 portable I received was a 6ch with DTMF pad.
Radio looks to be new old stock to me.
The freq range I'm seeing is 806.0125 thru at least 863.9875 and possibly a bit higher = These were the lowest and highest freqs programmed into the radio when I read it.
Radio looks exactly like a P200 only has the P500 label .
Also I did do a DIR/P on the P500 rss and in its directive files there were files that were named MTX810 so id say whoever it was that said the P500 was a spin off from the MTX was correct as I read the p500 rss files inside the program.

Then it would go:

P50 = HT10
P100 = HT50
P200 = HT600
P500 = MTX810

I'm sure I've missed a couple.
