Cannot upgrade gang charger

Post by mogman »

I get a flashing red light when I try to upgrade my Impres gang charger (no display) from V3.4 to V3.11 I have had no issues with the single Impres chargers and have done quite a few, tried it on several of the bays with no luck.
Also the V3.4 is OK for LI-ION yes?? If so not a big deal but read somewhere that a min. V3.9 is recommended for all charging applications.

I've heard 3.4 is good for most, but for the APX, 3.9 is preferred, especially if you leave the APX in the charger all day while the APX is on. GARY

3.9 does not support leaving the radio turned on in the charger. If you haven't cooked a battery yet, consider yourself lucky.

Supposedly a new firmware version (3.16 I think??) does support that... we've reached out to our reps and are waiting on word back.

Here's the FAQ on version 3.9 firmware
1. What’s the difference between V3.4 and V3.9?
Very Little: APX batteries are fully compatible with XTS chargers (w/inserts) with SW V3.4, therefore upgrading to V3.9 is not required. However, APX radio users leaving the radio in the “on” position will experience longer charging times. V3.9 has added SW to handle this situation if it happens occasionally. Motorola always recommends turning radio “off” when charging.

2. Can I charge APX batteries in XTS chargers with SW V3.4 using APX inserts?
Yes. APX batteries are fully compatible with XTS chargers with SW V3.4. Upgrade to V3.9 is not required.

3. I’m not using APX radios and my chargers have SW V3.4 in it. Do I have to upgrade to V3.9?
No. Upgrade to V3.9 is not required.

I do not leave my radios on in a charger, but that's why 3.9 was developed. I charge my APX in a 3.4 XTS charger with the sleeve. No problems at all. GARY

We've lost probably half a dozen NNTN8092A batteries due to people leaving the radios on in the chargers, one of which was uncomfortably close to exploding. Vehicle chargers seem to be more prone to cooking the batteries due to heat buildup but we've killed a couple in SUCs too. The age and charge cycle of the battery seems to also play a factor.
