One case of "ERR 0 81" with Saber-II R - solved!

Post by oh2glg »

Hello all on board.

A while back ago, maybe a month or so, I tried to re-program - for the first time ever - a newly arrived ruggedized Saber bought from Ebay.

Surprizing or not, I encountered few serious-looking problems with it.

I did ask some questions to figure out how to solve this problem. Some of those are discussed here:
Saber II R programming problems
Unhappy saber owner
To put in one sentence: After first try to re-program saber it become dead, only showing "ERR 0 81" on the display. That's it. Oh no.

While I was totally baffled with this case, I also tried to see how would my PC read a Systems Saber I with its own RSS software, which is far more sophisticated with COM-port testing. There was problems as well, but with different error message:
"Serial Bus Error....Could not aquire busy line. Turn off radio and try again". Oh, dear. How about that?

Since these were kinda related problems, I searced more and found solution by KB0NLY in thread:
System Saber Problem Question
kb0nly wrote:Check your cable between the computer and the RIB. I just went through this grief on my HT600's and it was the serial cable. I bought a plain old 9pin to 25pin serial modem cable and it ended up not having a wire from pin9 to pin22 which is the busy in line.
When I read that I instantly cheked out the cable between PC and RIB. And.. well well, there it was, or should I say it wasn't: No wire between pin 9 on D9-connector and on pin22 on D25-connector (I have a Sandy Ganz RIB).

Gee. One might expect that ordinary D9 to D25 straight serial cable would have all nine wires connected, but .. noo, not this time! How dumb of me not to check cable wiring first!

Anyways, now it looks like my programming problem with Saber II R is solved. Tomorrow I'll see what will happen with systems saber.

Late Edit:
After trying to read with Systems Saber as well on the next day at work, it become clear that all problems, including the "Could not aquire busy line" problem, are gone now.

Since all stories should have a lesson in somewhere I believe I learned two things here:
1. Check the the archives, it pays off sometimes! Or in fact, quite many times.
2. To make sure your cables are correct, make them yourself (if not using original accessories). Do not trust cheap chinese-made computer cables.
