Spectra 'ER 17/10' ???

Post by RESCUE161 »

I know I've asked this before, but I've tried everything I know of to correct this Error. When I turn the radio on, it displays ER 17/10, then flashes the channel name and NO EMER back and forth until I hold the Emergency button down. After that all is well until I turn the radio off and on again. I have disabled all of the emergency things and the siren in the rss, but still the problem occurs. The only thing I can think of is to run a 12V source to the 15 pin connector, but when I do this, I can't turn the radio off. Any suggestions? Please let me know. Thanks,
Scott

Dumb question but I've found that you always go back to basics on this stuff....have you checked the emergency jumper from on the back of the radio (in the 15 pin connector)? It's pin2 to I think pin 7.

That would more than likely be it. There is no jumper there. Is it on the inside of the radio, or do you just put a 15 pin connector with the pin shorted out? Sorry, I'm not Spectra literate...lol

If you have a speaker attached, the Motorola connector that plugs into the rear of the Spectra usually has the jumper installed inside of it. If it's a homebrew, you jumper pin 2 which is EXT_EMRG+ to GND. Sad thing is I can't find my Spectra schematic and the one on Batlabs is very vague as to which pin is the GND.

If you got a Mot connector, check inside the housing to make sure the wire's there and make sure that pin 2 didn't break off of the front.

I have had this problem in the past with a few radios and after checking all the paramiters, I still had the problem. I discovered that it was in the Command board and some times in the MLM.
I found this problem to be very common with the 800 Spectras that came from law enforcement. It seems that the Spectra that is used in conjunction with the MDT's will be subjected to voltage spikes in the car when the vehicle was left with all the equipment on and engine not running. When trying to start the vehicle with a low battery or jumpstarting it with the radio equipment still on, you end up spiking the radios and scramble the eproms. The programming of the radios for use of voice and data are setup for the emergeny button on the MDT and when you use the radio with out the MDT, it continues to look for the terminal but does not see it so it tries to send an emergency.
This may not always be the problem but something to be aware of.

I think you hit the nail on the head Metro. I put a jumper between pins 2 and 8, and now the radio still does the er 17/10 thing, but it stays on the previous mode that it was on prior to being turned off, ie: scan. Before, it would not return to scan and it would not let me turn scan on until I held down the Emerg button. It must be looking for the MDT still. I got the radio off of E-Bay, so it may have well been a law enforcement radio. All works great except for the er17/10. I can at least live with it now... Thanks for the help, Scott

Well, I found out what it was. Metro121 was right! I had to 'enable' the Data to disable some features, then I re-disabled the Data, and wha-la, no more annoying ER 17/10. Thank you guys for the help.
