Motorola NLN8858 (MX/STX Charger) LED Blinking

Post by MotoFAN »

Hi all!

What does mean Red/Green 'ping-pong' LED blinking?

It happens after few minutes of charging old MX300 battery.

Something like 90% of charging? Or something else?

They will stop blinking? I.e. green will steady after charging complete?

P.S.

Looks to me like either a bad battery or more likely a bad charger. Does it happen with multiple batteries?

That is not a standard thing for those chargers. If I recall correctly, you either get red or green, but nothing flashes and nothing does anything like that...

I have only 1 battery.

After about 30-60 minutes of blinking, charger changed to red, and after about 20 minues of steady red, changed to steady green.

The probable cause/reason is one of these:

1. The battery was too hot when you put it in the charger, or...
2. The battery was too cold when you put it in the charger, or...
3. The battery was too near completely dead (run down) when you put it in the charger.
In any of these cases it takes the charger a while to get its electronic head screwed on straight.

Check the battery's voltage when the green light comes on. If the battery is a nominal 7.5 volts and you're reading something like 8.4 volts then you've gotten a full or nearly full charge into it.

Buy an additional battery. No one can have a comfortable existence when you own a Motorola portable with only one battery. You will spend most of your time when the radio is turned on wondering if and when it's going to quit on you.

check the battery contacts, one of the contacts senses the battery and the voltage, make sure that there is nothing messing with that contact, if you need another charger I have a pallet full of them....
