The fail 001 is normally an indication that the synthesizer is out of lock.

If your getting this message from a radio that you just obtained, then I would expect to see a bad frequency programmed into the radio. If the radio has been working and has now started to show this problem, then I would expect it from bad caps that need to be replaced.

What I would do is read the radio with the software and see what has been programmed into the radio. Then fix the channels that are out of range if you find any. As a last resort, I would try to find another radio with the same model number and clone that radio into the one that is not working.

Bad capacitors in an XTL5000? Surely you jest.

Been working on too many Spectra radios and too many days with long hours each day. I start seeing caps after a while in my sleep.

But still think the issue is bad programming causing the VCO to go out of lock.

Well, that certainly beats finding out that the XTL line developed its own capacitor cancer.

Hi,

Just FYI.

If your voltage is nominal 12v-13.5v but your current draw is LOW (using a workbench power supply) will indicate a FAIL 001. If I disconnect the antenna cable from the radio, I don't get the FAIL 001 message. I discovered the hard way when I learned the current knob on the power supply was set too low. Problem went away when current was increased.

Cheers,
Aaron
