Motorola Astro 25 Rel. 7.2 LAN SWITCH FAILURE

One of the 2 LAN Switches (2) on the above system is showing failure and therefore cannot access the Zone Watch and the other terminals hooked on this LAN Switch 2. The LAN Switch (2) has been rebooted but fault remains. LAN SWITCH 1 is working ok. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks.

Have you hooked up a console cable and logged into the switch?

Usually there is a serial port that you can connect a laptop up to it, and if you look in the 7.x manuals, there should be a procedure for accessing the switch to configure it for the network. Using that you should be able to see the error logs and determine where the failure is.

Try using the Router Manager application in the PRNM Suite to connect to LAN Switch 2 and change the startup directory from Primary to Secondary and reboot the switch. If this solves the problem you probably have a corrupted boot.ppc or boot.cfg file in the primary directory. If you are unable to connect to the switch via Router Manager, connect to the console port directly. And copy the secondary files to the primary directory and reboot. If that doesn't solve the problem you most likely have a failed switch. Replace it with your spare switch or contact SSC for advanced replacement and further instructions.

I have accessed the switch and the configuration file is ok. The strange thing is, the original LAN Switch 2 developed same problem and in the end it was replaced with a brand new unit - the present one - which also has developed the same symptons!

If you have a 7.X system it's probably under contract still from Motorola for support. I would have them come out and check the logs on the switch. This will indicate where the problem is or at least point to the source of it.

It sounds like Motorola uses TFTP to pass around the configuration to the different switches in the system. If you replaced a switch in the system and the replacement failed in the same way, I would start looking at different factors. Did it happen in the same time span? Say after 1 month of operation, it failed again? Did you check through the error logs to see why it is in failure?

Placing yet another new switch into the system without spending the time troubleshooting and trying to figure out specifically what the issue was (NOTE: You may not want to reset the switch by pulling the plug - this will cause you to probably loose valuable log information!) will result in continued failures.

I would strongly recommend having someone with some strong networking background review your configurations and log files to determine where this problem resides.
