Apparently there is/was a bad HD heater flex shipped in MW's since the beginning of production (or close to it). I do know know when the actual change was made, but if your MW800 (5206, 5207 models) do not like to be turned on in cold weather, its due to a defective heater flex. This is covered by FSB10176A. Download or obtain a copy, and just ship your MW to the depot address listed on the FSB describing that your MW doesn't turn on in cold weather until the CPU box warms up enough. There is NO CHARGE for this FSB, as it is covered under warranty service.

Be advised though, your HD may come back with a "Software refresh" (IE, drive formatted and "restored").

The Motorola Mobile Workstation 800 (MW 800) is Motorola’s highest-performing and most ruggedized data computing solution. Available in early 2003, the MW 800 has a Pentium® IV 1.7 GHz processor and its memory can range from 256MG to 1GB. A single CPU can support dual displays and keyboards and two simultaneous independent applications. The CPU can also sustain multiple internal radios including private wide area modems, 802.11B, Bluetooth™, and GPS. The MW 800 also offers digital VCR capabilities allowing users to download/upload videos to a server.
The MW800 replaced the MW520 series 3-piece computers. The MW800 is a P4 based system. SVGA was a standard screen resoultion with XGA more common. The standard screen size was increased to 12.1 inches. An 8.4" SVGA display is available, however.

The MW800 display keys can be utilized as "hot keys" using the Motorola "ExtraKey" application. This application does not work on the MW-520, which has its own verison of "ExtraKey" as does the MW810.

The MW810 is the latest release of the MW series. Many of the functions are the same/similar, but the internal hardware has been updated. Please see the MW810 post for information.

MW800 has "F" part numbers that appear like MW520 models. A F5206 is actually a MW800 CPU. The MW520 stopped at F5205.

The MW800 comes with a red backlit USB keyboard that normally plugs into the MW display. The keyboard connector has two screws which allows the plug to be secured into the display. Any USB keyboard should work if you do not like the one that comes standard. Replacement Motorola keyboards list at $300.

The MW800 uses a single laptop 200 pin PC2100 266MHz DDR memory module. The unit will offically support up to 1GB of memory. Larger modules have not been tested.

5206 vs 5207

The 5207 MW800 is an updated 5206 with some modified hardware. The system board replaced the internal CF card slot with a mini-PCI slot, and a SIM card slot has been added just above the PC Card slot. On the rear, attached dust covers and an additional USB port have been added. Another change is that the 2nd display connector is now DVI based, but does not support the usual DVI connector. Part numbers for the cables will be forthcomming. The AUX connector has also been changed from a DB15 to a narrow centronics connector, like the monitor connectors. USB on the CPU is now 2.0. The display remains 1.1 for all model MW800s due to the USB interface in the display.

The GPS was changed with the F5207 to the Trimble iQ from the Trimble Lassen SK8/SKII. The connector header has changed, but the GPS is located in the same spot.

F5217 vs the F5207

The F5217 is a modified F5207. It uses the uBlox SBR-LS-0-000 dead reckoning GPS in place of the Trimble iQ GPS. In addition it will support up to a 1.8GHz Pentium 4M CPU. The motherboard is also slightly modified to accept the uBlox GPS (the header is different) and contains a gryo. The uBlox GPS supports DGPS and 16 sats. To fully use the dead reckoning features you must purchase the auxillary input/output cable and connect it to the vehicle speed sensor and backup lights. With the onboard DGPS, the uBlox GPS provides very accurate location information even in dense cities based on personal observation.

The F5217 was called the "Mobile Gateway". It has 3 10/100 LAN ports, a second DB9 serial port, 3 USB 2.0 ports. This option deleted the firewire port and the 2nd display option. The unit is still capable of an internal wireless card (mini-PCI), an iDEN or DataTac internal modem.

The AUX connector functions are also changed and only allows for ignition switching and speed inputs for the GPS.

The software drivers are the same as the 5207.

COM Port Assignments

Although there is only one physical COM port, this is how it breaks down, and should be assigned as below. Prevent problems now!

Default COM port assignments F5206/F5207:
COM 1 - Hardware serial port 1
COM 2 - Internal GPS
COM 3 - Internal iDEN or PRM240 data modem
COM 4 - Internal connection for the CPU Diagnostic program/MPS codeplug manager. This is the data connection that the Motorola MW800 software uses to change CPU settings, health, etc.

Default COM port assignments F5217:
COM 1 - Hardware serial port 1
COM 2 - Internal GPS
COM 3 - Internal iDEN or PRM240 data modem
COM 4 - Hardware serial port 2
COM 5 - Internal connection for the CPU Diagnostic program/MPS codeplug manager. This is the data connection that the Motorola MW800 software uses to change CPU settings, health, etc.

Misc information - PRM240 DataTAC modem
The interal DataTAC modem is manufactured by Wavenet in the land of the Fosters Beer. The name of the series is "Boomer" and it appears that they make quite a few PRM240 sized modems that may work on EVDO, iDEN and other networks. If you can get your hands on one of these other modems, perhaps it could work in place of the PRM. I wouldn't see why not. iDEN and other similar modems have been offered as options in the past. The PRM240 DataTAC modem supports all the usual Motorola Data standards (MDC, 9.6/19.2 etc).

The PRM240 modem is programmed via WinRSS and supports a limited AT command set if you were to bring up local terminal. The following are the only known commands to work with this modem:

AT\C = Coldstart
AT\U3 = Native Mode
ATI1 = SW Version
ATI4 = SW DDate
AT\B2 to AT\B7 to change the serial port baud rate from (12200 baud to 38400 baud).

Motorola has pretty much locked down internal replacement parts for the MW making 99% of them "depot only" items. Most customers CANNOT order these and/or will not show up on parts search. Even if you want a $10 cable, they will only "sell" you the part if you send it to the depot ($$$).

Adding GPS to 5207
The unit uses the same GPS as the ML900, the Trimble iQ. That part is approx $99 but can be had on eBay or any Trimble dealer for +/-$25. As this GPS is physically different than the SKII used in the 5206 but the CPU box wasn't retooled, the following will be needed to properly install the GPS unit:

All the displays will work with each model on the primary port. Only difference is that you will need a different monitor cable for the 5207 for the 2nd display (due to the change in 2nd display connector). This does not effect the 5206 which uses the same connector for display 1 and display 2.

This cable brings out the auxilliary connections in the F5207 and F5217 modules. This will bring out mic in, speaker out, +5vDC +12vDC, voltage in for the general purpose I/O 0&1, USB and some other misc stuff. On the F5217, the USB is replaced by speedometer inputs. Same cable works for both. Cable terminates into 26 flying leads. The pin outs are documented in the F5207/F5217 CPU Owners Manual 6802976C60-O which can be downloaded on motorola.com

Seeking assistance with my MW800 (F5207A). I cant get it to boot up in normal mode. Only in Safe Mode will it actually let me log in. It eventually goes straight to a black screen, and then shows a connection problem between the Monitor and the CPU. Shortly after I see this screen, the CPU will do a forced re-start. Ive checked all the connections, and cant seem to find any issues. Its been very difficult to find support, and of course Motorola was no help. If you know of a solution please DM me so Ill get an email to check this website again. Not really an avid visitor. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
