Hi, Jayco!

What is the model number of the radio?

When you turn on the radio what is the version number that is displayed?
What version of PC Configure are you using to read/write to the radio?

You need PC Configure 2.10.2

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but are you sure the software is set to the 5100 and not the 5300 type radio? It is simple to check at the start before you even try to read the radio. Another thing to check is the baud rate being used. When I have trouble, I slow down the setting to 9600. In some cases it helps.
