Common Ham Simplex, Freq and PL?? 927.5??

Post by Max-trac »

I have searched here and on the AR902 Yahoo group.
I cannot find a consensus on a HAM "National 900 Simplex" frequency.

We are using 927.5.
WHAT PL (OR DPL) is everyone using???
(suggestions that we use CSQ obviously have not mobiled around in the city).

What radios do you own?: Progreso soup can with CRT

In the DC area we use 927.500 simplex, but it's CSQ. I don't
think there's such a thing a nationwide "most popular"
CTCSS or DPL. We use 156.7/5A mostly, but that goes
back to the pre-synthesizer days when you usually had
only one tone in your MT500 and wanted the radio to do
double duty for FD and hamming; you know what I mean.
Fortunately we don't have all that much crud gumming
things up on 900 at this time around our local area.

I was under the impression that 927.5000 was the assumed national simplex but that the PL designation was a regional choice.
I have my radio gear set for 927.5000 PL 151.4 and can switch the decode on/off. There was a thread either on batlabs or
perhaps it was the AR902 yahoo group which debated about this issue but I do not think there was ever any consensus among
all the participants on the debate.

There seems to be a need for deciding on a freq and tone.
I have driven the all the lower 48 twice with radios from HF thru 900 (all bands).
And it is obvious that the 900 band plan needs some work.
What I found was 927.5 was the most common (at least up until this time last year)
As for tone, I programmed several channels, and scanned.
Most common on both trips were 114.8, 141.4 and 151.4.
But there was "traffic" on several other tones.
And some of that traffic was on repeater ouputs at 927.5
Western states seem to be more 114.8 than any other.

Ah Here we go again.....

I am open for change if it flies better than what i have now.

since we ( i mean us old timers on this list-AR902 ) brought the 902 to the
masses back in 98 or 99, we have used serveral 151.4, 100.0 ,114.8

Several of us were stuck on : 927.5000 PL 151.4 and some used
100.0 and yet a few others used 114.8

I belive it is generally a regional thing and certainly was not set in stone.

Most of the radios i have all three, some only have 151.4.( my GTX due
to channel capacity).

most of my comms the i have had while travelling were on 927.5.151.4.

but hey i also am one that runs CSQ most of the tiime anyhow unless i
am in a populated area

and as Nate said quite possibly not legal in some parts of CO/WY. on
that freq at all.

#1. The freq should be something all the radio models can tune with
out major mods and
one that uses CTCSS or DCTCSS (to me it does not matter as my radios
will do both).

#2 for PL/DPL the choice Should be EZ to remember: ie for examples....

CTCSS - 156.7 (since PS uses that on ITAC channels)
or
DCTCSS - 073 with a normal code, dcs 073, D073N (73, us hams use
this term a lot)

#3 or just do nothing as we all have done in the past - just use what
we know works regionally and leave it at that.

Our group (growing) uses 927.500 without any tones, it's a natural talk-in for our camping/train watching and since 900 is relatively unused, and we inhabit an area that has no 900 systems or other nasty trash, it's become our defacto standard for a talk-in frequency when we are out camping/train watching.

And our location is Shawmut, which is just east of Gila Bend, AZ.

Just my couple of pennies added to the list.

Here in Ohio, 131.8 seems to be the most popular repeater PL, so on 927.500 I usually transmit 131.8 and receive CSQ. I haven't noticed much in the way of interference, but I don't have a mobile in car, so I'm probably missing it. A couple of friends and I also have 927.525, 927.500, and 927.600 programmed with 131.8 encode/decode.

927.500 in NEPA, usually no tone for simplex; common local tone around here is 82.5; my repeater (927.9000 ; input -25 MHz) will likely use the 82.5 tone, but I also can switch to DPL311.

927.5000Mhz no tone for most of Arizona.. If you want to go hunting around http://www.arrl.org/nfcc/coordinators.htm#3
will give you some ideas. but a simplex frequency was never set in stone nationwide
