Batboard

Due to my own stupidity, I knocked my GTX HT off the hood my car and well, it hit the pavement. I tried turning on the radio and sure enough, it does not turn on now. I checked the battery, its fully charged and working.

I found a disassembly guide online and well opened it up. Gasket was broken, but thats a easy fix along with the internal speaker/mic connector which I can fix or use a external clip mic. But I cannot seem to identify anything thats an obvious failed part.

Is there anything I should check first to see if I can get it back online or should I get a different GTX?

I spoke to a few people about this! And were all in agreement, "we have to see it, its hard to say" if you can't check it out yourself? See if someone on the board here will look at it?
Go to the For Sale area, & post wanted someone to fix. Post your city & state. There may be someone in your area! Or a motorola service shop in the yellow pages? I'm sure you have a group of hams working 900Mhz. that will look at it...good luck....Jim

PS: don't put HT's on the hood anymore, on the seat. This way if you sit on it & you break the antenna? we can narrow it down....

Look to see if the mounting lugs on the volume/power control are still soldered to the ground plane on the circuit board. While you're at it check for the same on the rotary switch. There usually isn't enough solder on them in the first place, and any impact to the knobs can break the connection. You can often diagnose this condition by simply inspecting the knobs for damage. Shaft wobble can give it away too.

HA, yes normally I would not put it on the hood of my car, but sometimes you don't think "Oh, nothing will happen to it" when your doing something mundane for a second like tying your shoe

I'll take look at the dials and see real quick. Though it did land on its PTT side. I just would try like to try to fix it myself; kind of a pride thing. But I will be taking a visit anyways to my local motosexual (ha) this afternoon anyways so no big deal.

And I thought I did put my location in on the side...I'll fix it.

Another thing to check, when they hit hard as yours probably did, is the uproc. clock crystal. It fractures or comes off of it's mount and the radio doesn't power up. Check for clock signal at the uproc. Just might be the problem.

BTW, I'm amazed there's a fuse in the GTX.

Yeah, it's a surface mount part, but if you can figure out which part it is you can replace it with a picofuse from Frys.

Well, I got the report back.

Obviously, the mic/speaker connector needs to be replaced, and the pico-fuse, but here's an odd one: the flex cable assembly connector!
