How to tweak RSSI Threshold for Roaming?

Post by TreyH »

I'm trying to tweak my RSSI Threshold (dBm) setting for roaming on my portables. I have a 4 repeater site with considerable overlap. It would be nice to have some idea how the signal bars on the display would equate out to a dBm value. For example, would 3 bars indicate something like -80dBm. That would give me an idea of dBm at test locations. Any tips/suggestions for tweaking the RSSI Threshold for roaming greatly appreciated....

I don't know off the top of my head, however If I recall there is an extensive topic in the product planner dealing exactly with your situation. Hope that helps.

Logged about 200 road miles using the "Survey Tool". It makes a nice Google Earth file you can use to get a visual on the signal levels. - Thanks gopher.
The product System Planner has some good info also - thanks FMROB.

How much overlap? What are they set to now (in dB)? What are you hoping to accomplish? Quick and dirty way is to reduce by 10db until you get desired operation (using a select group of radios as a test bed). FB
......I understand what the package says sir, but you cannot talk 28 miles with 3 AA batteries.......

It's a download off of Motorola's BusinessOnline.Motorola.com site.
You will need an account and have purchased the CPS software I believe.

We've purchased the CPS software, but do not see this software. Do I need to contact Motorola and ask them to grant me access?

Found It. Go into Business online under software. There will ne a search box, type in survey tool and two versions will appear, linux and windows. Seems easy to use.

Never used the survey tool but if you upgrade the firmware in the portable to the latest you can hit the left arrow key three times in succession and then hit the right arrow key three times to view the RSSI reading in dBm. It will keep updating as well...very nice feature.
