XPR 4550 heat

Post by Max »

I have 2 XPR 4550 stacked on top of each other in a small inclosure in my computer desk, they are set up for ( RX ) monitor only.

I notice that they seem to get warm/hot when i have then powered on in RX mode,i have the "Radio Remote Monitor " off so i'm sure they are not being keyed up remotely.

Is this normal ?

I'd have to say yes. In an enclosure, you will accumulate heat. Stacking them allows the heat to concentrate in the core. Place them on their side so heat rises off both independently. They may still be warm to the touch, but they won't heat each other as much in the enclosure unless it's really small.

What radios do you own?: Many Motorola's

I have two stacked in a small service truck. They were right up against each other, they were both warm to the touch.....mostly monitoring. (One UHF and one VHF.) I then put about a half radio thickness space between them and they are a lot cooler now.

They are a warm running radio, and compared the the CDM1250's they replaced, are about the same heat generation wise.
