Upgrade W3 to O3 on XTL5000 Radios

Post by bbertrand »

I have two XTL5000 radios with the W3 head. We chose to upgrade the HHCH to the O3 model. Motorola gaves us the list of parts to order to make the conversion. We have completed that. However, now that I have done that I am not able to read/write the radios any longer. The radios power up and we are able to hear radio traffic over the speakers, but not able to interact with the radios at all. I am speculating that the Flex cable between the interface board and the radio is not correct. After a the radios attempts to boot a couple of times, it finally decides to display "Maintenance Mode - Remote Device" in the display. Anyone go through this before? Also, does anyone know if there is a way to verify if the Flex Cable used with the W3 is compatible with the interface board for the O3?

Thanks for the time!!!

Have to ask but have changed the control head on CPS?
Look under the tools menu.

Also did you reflash to the latest and greatest.
The problem can be that when you purchased the 03 head it came with version 9 and your radio is version 7 (or whatever) Rember thesae new control heads now have their own software and it needs to be compatible with the host.

I'll 2nd the firmware needing to match, there should only be 1 interconnect that will work with that head, anything else will smoke..... literally.

Can you post the part #'s that you were given to order?

Thanks for the input so far. Just so you know, I have not flashed anything. Nor have I changed the control in the tools menu. The biggest reason is I cannot get the radios to respond with the new TIB in place. The reason I was asking about the flex cable being an issue is that the one they told me to order, and I did so, did not match the pin connector on the radio. The label on the Flex cable says Mid-Power and mine are High Power. So, simply reused the Flex Cable that was there because the two connectors matched. I thought I could get the device switched on the tools menu to the new head if I could ever get the radio to respond to the CPS. I have to admit, I have never flashed a radio. Is the firmware expensive? Or, is that a download through MOL that I have not found so far.

Anyway, I know the radios were reading with the old Interface because I read the radios to "back them up" just before I started the change.

Thanks for all the help.
Blaine

You will need the correct interconnect board to RF deck flex cable. You are lucky no smoke was released.

Parts ID would be the call to make, good luck though, 4 tries and I never got the right flex, for a high power, of all things.

flash refresh is 75 dollars, the good part is a smartrib is no longer required
maybe you have to change the control head in tools before doing the actual work

Don't wanna knock this off topic but is their an O3 option HHCH for the XTVA?

Also this:

Required for Remote Mount
PMLN4958A
O3 CAN 17' EXTENSION CABLE
1
$90.00
AAD

Will that part work for the XTVA HHCH and the O3? If not whats the Part # for the XTVA HHCH extension cable... Tried to do a search but no find for anything useful.

Cheers,
AJ

It's highly unlikely you'll get your XTS3000 to talk to an O3 head in an XTVA. In an XTVA, for the most part, it's the radio that does the talking to the head, rather than the XTVA electronics.

How about an XTS5000 Model 3? :)

Gotta admit it's a nice thought...

Does anyone know if one of the new O3 control heads can function with an Astro Spectra W3 radio instead of an XTL5000?

I have had seven XTL1500 mobiles in the last four months go tits up throwing the very same error code after a programming attempt. Not saying it's related yet....I have a GCC case open on it.

I am looking to convert a w5 to a w3, are you selling all the old w3 parts? I would buy. If not a list of parts would be great. I am really only interested in the interconnect board, the flex cable and whatever else in needed on the rf deck end. I have the w3 head and all the parts from the deck to the head.

You know I had forgotten I posted on this a long time ago. Boy, talked about being flakey. Sorry! Anyway, I do have some of the parts still if you are interested in buying them.

Thanks,

Did you figure out what the right part number for radio->tib flex was for the mid power? All of my service manuals I've seen seem to say HKN6190 - I'm wondering if you have found/been told different?

Infact -- from the service manual, it looks like HKN6192 might be the right part (at least on the O3 -> TIB side)?

Could someone with a factory remote O5 check and see what the TIB flex part number is?

It turns out the proper part number is this: 3064658H04. This is for all of the HIGH power remote mount heads. The other flex cable is for low and mid power which is the 6190.

thanks,

OK,

I've been working on a mid-mount O5 which works perfectly as a dash -but just refuses to be remote mounted... Several heads later, 3 different flex's, 2 different control cables, 2 power cables, etc, just keeps coming up in maint mode... Not to mention now 3 different TIB's.

I know that even after we had the correct parts in place, we had to have the unit flashed (even though Motorola told me NUMEROUS times that was NOT necessary). After that, it worked fine. In fact, did it on two units, both had to be flashed counter to Motorola' s advice.

I too have an issue with an Oscar 5 head that starts up in Maint Mode whenever I boot up the radio. When I hook it up to the laptop via USB to mic port, the laptop recognizes the radio being there and the display will stay in Maint Mode, but go to "Local."

How did you remedy the problem if you were able to?

the o5 head is very finicky regarding which rear housing it's connected to (there are two part #'s, both appear similar physically)

and

you have to have the right firmware in the head to match the host of the radio....

otherwise, it doesn't work.

more to follow, i'm compiling a radio host/CH firmware chart
