Mixed mode?

Post by arlojanis »

For mixed mode, is the radio setup for DPL transmit and receive and NAC transmit and received on the same channel, or are two channels used? If on one channel, how does the repeater decide with mode to repeat?

What radios do you own?: All of them

Mixed mode applies only to receiving analog and digital signals. If you want to transmit on both analog and digital, you will need two separate channels.

You prog two channels in the subscriber units - one for analog conventional (freq, PL), and the other for digital (freq, nac, unique ID). A dual mode enabled rptr will take it from there because the difference in the inbound is as clear as night and day.

Yeah, the only Moto radio that ever did user-selectable analog or P25 on the same channel was the fabled Clean Cab Astro Spectra. If you're running secure, however, you can program a mode for mixed mode receive and analog transmit, and the secure type will be forced to Astro in which case you can switch between clear analog and secure P25 with the coencentric switch.

It still works that way today, in the Astro25 line (XTL5000/XTL2500/XTS5000/XTS2500 so far tried). We have a single ADP encryption code defined and have it set to use the ABC switch on the XTS as Secure on / off, for P25 channels. The idea was to allow the user to turn on or off their encryption while being in Digital transmit mode, even on a mixed mode channel.

To fix this issue, we have to visit the "Secure Configuration" tab under Secure, and check the "Ignore Sec / Clr switch when strapped". We have the encryption for these channels strapped to a specific encryption code. If this check box isn't checked, then if you are on a mixed mode channel with analog transmit enabled, turning encryption "on" will change your transmit to P25 encrypted instead of the analog transmit you may have declared in the personality. If we want a different encryption code for a different channel, we define which encryption is "strapped" in a different personality, and refer to this in the zone layout personality selection.

It's the only way I know to turn on P25 (although encrypted) with a switch without having a seperate mode for the purpose. However, we really didn't want to do this - we want the encryption on/off to only work on defined P25 transmit channels, even if the channel is mixed mode Rx. Once we checked this box, we made a mirror image zone of the analog transmit zone, added a "D" character added to the Zone letter character display (i.e. Zone "A", Zone "AD" in the case of a portable). This tells the user which way the transmit is set - no second character D, its analog transmit - no guessing. Analog only channels in the first zone are still defined as analog only channel in the "D" zone, so that the operator can't get it wrong.
