Problems with Astro Saber Firmware Upgrades!!!!

Post by RADIO43 »

Whats happen...

Just tried to upgrade two Astro Sabers Model I's (1 Meg Vocons) to R07.70.00/08.03.03 upgrade and I believe I bricked the radios. Should not say bricked because I can still read and write to them. I also get a longer then then normal green power and self test light when turning on but nothing after that. Even more interesting when reading both radios it shows the right Firmware (R07.70.00) but shows the DSP as 00.00.00!!!!!! One radio had VSLEP Firmware/Host and one had Analog Firmware/Host.

Any thoughts here.... I already tried to re flashing the radios again and got that radios already have been flashed.....

As a point of intrest, my setup is exactly what it should be.... I have flashed numerous radios before with this setup and flashkey....

Thanks in advance....

What was the DSP before you flashed them? Was it I 0x.xx.xx, or N0x.xx.xx (or A)? What file did you use for the upgrade? If you used XTS3000 firmware it will not support the older DSP and it will do exactly as you are saying.

Okay,

In speaking with n7maq.... I have learned that this error occurs when you are try to upgrade a older Astro Saber with DSP starting with an "I" or "M" with XTS3000 specific firmware. I was using an upgrade file that was specifically for an XTS3000 and not both Astro Series portables.... The interesting thing (and why I have had no problems before) is that a Astro Saber whos DSP starts with an "A" or "N" will take the XTS3000 CVN specific upgrade file for the XTS3000 and upgrade the Astro Sabers firmware with no problem. So the moral of the story is to make sure you use a Astro Saber/XTS3000 CVN file when upgrading an Astro Saber with DSP starting with "I" or "M".

Thank you to n7maq for all of this information on this....

So are these radios permanently toast, or can they be brought back to life with the "correct" upload? GARY N4KVE

Most of the time they can just be re-flashed with the correct firmware. In my experience most will recover.

If not you need pull the 256K DSP Flash ROM and reflash it.

Edited to correct. Thanks Larry P.

With a newer/correct .CVN file and different flashkey, these can be corrected.....

XTS3000 specific firmware, never heard of it. Can someone elaborate? Name/Version what's special about it, etc...?

Nevermind, a member enlightened me off line.
