IFR 1900

Post by GlennD »

I really need to stop making lowball offers on buy it now items. I received an IFR 1900 a couple of weeks ago. Even though it was listed for 2200 they took my $1500 offer.

Like the mil 1600's it had a first generation LCD display. I was going to put in a 6.5 inch 800x600 display. On a whim I listed the obsolete LG number on eBay. To my surprise there was a Sharp replacement listed and the price was reasonable. I installed it and the viewing angle is much better. It was almost drop in. The light wires were a little too short and I had to extend them.

Now I have a super 1600S since the cellular stuff is obsolete. It covers the 1296 ham band. It has a switchable LNB for more sensitive off the air measurements. Finally it has the high stability oven as stock instead of the TCXO. Not that it matters since I use a GPS reference.

This is interesting - what is the obsolete LG/IFR part number?
I am wondering if there is a non-ifr usa source instead of having to go offshore.
I don't use ebay and paypal so ebay is not an option for me and perhaps many others.
I purchased my 1900 specifically because of the 1296 band coverage.

The sharp replacement has the same part number. I threw away the original so I do not have it to reference. There are a lot of look alike units but I do not know if they work. If you look above the unit do not forget to adjust the unmarked contrast on the front. As suggested the external VGA output works well.

I would guess the seller would take a check but it might take a while to clear. I have heard horror stories about Paypal and indeed it is impossible to speak to as real human. Mostly it works fine.

I find it hard to believe that anyone in HK would take a check from someone in the usa.
In the Ebay sellers pictures you posted above I did not see anything that looked like
it was and adjustment. Perhaps you can specify that in one of the pictures.
Thanks for the info and part number.

Most eBay sellers in China want to be paid by Paypal since it does currency conversions. The contrast is the unmarked hole in the front. Behind the hole is a miniature surface mount pot. They come set for right on or slightly tilted down like a laptop display. When I get a chance I will see if it helps my military 1600S. It is a pain to get to since you have to pull the front panel.

I notice many of the Chinese sellers also have an Amazon presence so you might look there if you hate eBay.

Many years ago I got defrauded on eBay. I did get a small amount back from eBay. Paypal never forgets. Several years later that same seller sold something else with the same ID. Paypal took money out and refunded me.

There are similar displays on Amazon but I am too cheap to find out if they work.

I ordered two displays from the eBay seller. The first one has been in USPS limbo but I got the second one weeks ago. At least you can follow it with a tracking number.

I would guess the contrast is set for straight on or slightly below like on a laptop. It is certainly easier to set at test than removing and re-installing the front. You have to detach the display and reconnect the front to get the thing to turn on. NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! It is a several hour chore. I might try my stock mil 1600S since the display dissipears from above. The new display is far better but it also is calibrated for below. You really need to adjust the contrast for service monitor use.
