I have some PM400 mobiles with early firmware that I want to upgrade. After doing some digging in the service manuals I am confused; the manuals seem to suggest that only the RKN4081 cable with the FKN8096 adapter allows for flashing.

Is this the case or can a standard RIB and some other cable be used to perform the upgrade?

Milt, I routinely use the standard RIB programming cable(GTF374B) with the FKN8096 flash adapter to update PM series firmware. I've never had a problem. Sometimes the Motorola documentation can be misleading if it's not complete.
