PR1500/XTS2500 dust cover removal

Post by MotoVio »

What's the safest way to take the stock dust cover off without jacking up the radio's case?

unless you jam a screwdriver in there and crank on it you wont damage it. All it takes is a little pressure to pop it off.

Nice, so am I looking at applying pressure from the inside of it at the top or bottom.. or from the outside of it at the top or bottom? Do I gotta use something plastic or can I do it bare handed?

It pops off from the bottom and is 'retained' by a hook on the top (so, hook at top first when putting it back on and the bottom portion snaps in place). I put a piece of electrical tape on the tip of a small or medium flat-bladed screwdriver and gently pry from the bottom of the cover, with the blade being in the little square recess on the radio housing at the bottom of the accessory dust cover. The tape protects the housing area and the cover when you pry. So that I don't mark the side of the radio housing, I place a business card (or two) on the housing where the screwdriver would be getting its leverage. The cover comes off easily. Good luck.
You can buy the XTS tactical dust cover that snaps on and off with your fingers and is retained by an antenna loop, like the old Jedi days.

Thanks Jeff; that sounds easy & as fail safe as possible. I'm gonna give it a go when I get home.

Definitely gonna invest in a couple of those Heavy Duty Dust Covers in the future too tho!

1571960L01 in case anybody was wondering.

Thanks again y'all!
