Remote Mounting the XTL 5000 mobile radio - UPDATED 6/7/08

Post by batdude »

seems as tho sometimes i come to the party late....found this out today.

i am going to try to make sense out of all this, so bear with me. besides the previously discussed by the pager geek in this thread (relating to control head/radio firmware incompatibilities):

http://batboard.batlabs.com/viewtopic.p ... 33#p352433

there exists a "fracture" in the production of the XTL5000 mobile with the O5 control head.

the fracture occurs in July 2006.

from eCAT:
Dash to Remote

Converts an existing dash mounted XTL 5000 O5 mobile radio or an existing dash mounted XTL 2500 mobile radio to a remote mounted radio. Applicable to Low/Mid power models only.

***Due to the evolution of the O5 control head, please follow these guidelines when ordering a dash to remote retrofit kit:

1. If you are retrofitting XTL 5000 O5 or XTL 2500 radios that shipped AFTER 7/01/06 - order the H1818.

2. If you are retrofitting XTL 5000 O5 radios that shipped BEFORE 7/01/06 - you MUST ORDER the H1824. If you are retrofitting XTL 2500 radios that shipped BEFORE 7/1/06 - Please see the XTL 2500 price page.

that said - the majority of the XTL's out there in the used market (i.e. MINE) - are pre-july 2006 models that originally had early release firmware in them (host 2/3/4).

Couple of rambling points here:

- pre-2006 radios will work fine in dash configuration with the O5 head... however, they will not function correctly in remote config without new hardware. this is the configuration that i have been selling.

- pre-2006 radios will work fine in REMOTE configuration with the O5 head... as long as you are running pre-version 6 host firmware.

- the difference in the two kits above - the H1818 and H1824, is that the H1824 includes a new control head, and is $200 more than the H1818 kit ($525 vice $325).

HKN6169 remains the O5 standard remote cable (17 ft) and must be ordered separately (it's about $50)
HKN6188 remains the O5 remote head power/speaker cable ($20)

i have run across a LOT of part #'s from XTL's over the last year. some are still valid, some show new items replacing the old one:

for example, the remote mount housings i have are part # HLN1453. This part # has been superceeded by: HLN1468.
I have no idea what the differences are between the two.

remote housing part # HLN1471 (now at revision D) - appears to be both the remote housing and control head (probably part of the H1824 kit)

control head HLN1463 has been superceeded by HLN1468 (no idea what the differences are) - suspect that 1463 is the pre-july 2006 and 1468 is the post-july 2006 models....

so - it looks like that *if* you purchased or plan to purchase one of the XTL's from me, you are going to have to bite the bullet and buy the H1824 remote kit...

i need someone to call parts ID (who has time) and find out EXACTLY what part #'s are included in the H1824 retrofit kit.....

once that is done, perhaps I can figure out what configurations work... and which ones dont - and exactly what parts are required.

older O5 heads identifed by part #: HLN1463
MUST go with remote housing with circuit board part #: HLN1453
the flex color BROWN/SILVER does NOT matter. it is still #: HKN6191

*****************************************************************************

new O5 heads identified by part #: HLN1467
MUST go with remote housing with circuit board part #: HLN1468
the flex color BROWN/SILVER does NOT matter. it is still #: HKN6191

bad part - (and you knew it was coming) is that the HLN1453 is no longer available or orderable.....

**THAT'S** why there is a break in production.....

So; the bottom line is: If you've purchased one of the gazillion "old" XTL control heads; how much $$$ are you going to have to spend to upgrade it to work as a remote mount? I can only assume that the reason there are so many of these heads on the market, is that they are the "broken" ones...

I have a W7 XTL5000, I am trying to convert it to an O5 style head. I am using CPS 12.00.00. When I open the menu to select the control head type and pick "O5" it gives me an error saying it can not convert the head type because there are options that are incompatible. This is a standard config remote mount UHF XTL5000, no DEK, no siren etc.

Anyone have any clues?

Most likely you have older/non-supported firmware in the radio. What is your host/dsp and flashcode?

What is the part number for the 17 ft remote cable? I can't find it anywhere.

Hint... hit "Find" and type in 17 and you'll find the answer in this very thread.

The control head and the chassis are separate devices that communicate with each other through the cable. The flash firmware that runs chassis has to be the same version of firmware that runs the control head. When you flash a radio, it updates both the firmware in the chassis as well as the firmware in the control head(s). Even if they are the same model head, you cannot take a control head off of one radio and put it on another unless both control heads had the same version of firmware.

I have a control head problem too...
I have bought this xtl5000 on Ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/190577668457?ss ... 1497.l2649
It has the old astro spectra style remote on the radio part - and is may 2006 production - so it is probably original fitted with w7 head - but comesw with a o5 head.
I have tryed to convert it to dashmount by pulling of the 2 remote parts - but the flex cable inside will not fit on the back of the o5 head.
What would be easiest for me - to make it dash or remote - and what parts do i need?
I have a spare w7 head from a astro spectra - can it work ? I ask because the other end of the flex cable looks like it will fit on the w7 head)
I would of cause prefer to have the o5 head work - and as remote - please help me....

Are the parts listed below good for 2500 M5 heads as well?

Does any of this affect a dash mounted XTL? I have an older one that I want to upgrade the control head on.

MOT jacked up the price on the individual parts. It's about half as expensive to go APB now and order the H1818 kit. Seems they forgot to increase the kit price:)

I'VE got a question:

What about the HLN1463**E** O5 head? I've got 2 of them, both with v13.x CH firmware, that won't work with EITHER
the older HLN1453B CHIB (FAIL 05/93) **OR** the newer HLN1468A CHIB (FAIL 05/94). Which CHIB matches this control
head? I know a HLN1463D was working previously with no problems. So is there in fact a third rev/combo?

You need the HLN1453 CHIB. Have you tried a sync of the head through the mic jack with an RS232 cable?

I do have an HLN1453 (2 of them, in fact). The 1463D head works. Multiple 1463E heads do not.

I have a customer who has a XTL 2500 he wants separated... I have called Motorola and was told the kit I need is H1818C but I'm having trouble ordering it.

From what I have understood on the phone with them is I can order it but I have to submit a request for the part kit and then wait to see if it is approved or not - this is for an install for next week. Parts verification will not give me the part numbers for the items in the kit and above I saw where a kit was separated out into each individual part number. When I go to search the catalog on MOL it shows the part not found but I can go to quick buy and it finds the part and puts it on the order for me.

What I am needing is to verify I have the correct part numbers for the separation kit for the XTL2500 mfg 07/31/2009

Moto had said the reason it was hard to get the parts were they were on hold for fed, state and local governments - which my customer is the local county sheriff's office and jail so they would fit the requirements just it will take too long to go through all the steps... The reason for the rush is the officer will be on vacation next week and they are moving him from a pickup to a Tahoe and wants it up and running by July 6 when he goes back on duty.

We have ordered these a few times and the HC1818 part # is correct but we had to do it directly through our account manager.
I can't comment on the priority user base with the exception that I don't think the Fed's are using XTL2500's, but I could be incorrect.

The kits are pretty straight forward and work as advertised.
