APX7500/8500 analog RX sensitivity vs XTL and MCS

Post by g8tzl2004 »

Anybody compared the RX very weak signal analog sensitivity of a VHF APX7500/8500 against an XTL5000 or MCS2000?

Real world rather than "worse case" official specs!!

Hopefully the specs are consistent across identical APX7500's.

I haven't had an XTL in my truck for awhile now but I do have an APX8500 now and just prior to that a Dual Radio setup with two APX7500s and 07 head.
I can say without a doubt the weak signal sensitivity in analog (e.g.146.520) is at least as good as the published spec of -121dBm (-123 with preamp) with the unit installed and looking at it with my old Motorola R2014D analyzer. My 7500's both performed similarly.
I gave away my XTL to another tech so don't recall what I had for sensitivity, although I did also have the preamp enabled and I'm sure it was clean or I would have remembered it.
Never had an MCS installed so I can't say, but I do have a CDM1500 in Low Band with similar characteristics.
There was an MTN out recently (MTN-0100-17-NA) listing symptoms of "may intermittently experience distorted audio or out-of-range condition while within adequate system coverage (Trunked or Conventional) after roaming in and out of a “strong” signal condition. I have not experienced this with my unit so left my firmware package at 15.xx.xx
By "Real World" I can only assume you mean performing an Effective Receiver Sensitivity test with the unit installed- I haven't performed this test yet but I suppose it's worth looking into...

The BER results speak for themselves... this is my personal V/U 7500.

Hi motorola_otaku, Is that a 2975 or 3920?

Cancel that last one - it's obviously a 3920 as it's autotuning an APX7500.
