SABER RSS Problem. HELP!!!!!!

Whenever I try to run my Saber RSS, I get this message:

SABER RSS requires addition support from DOS. Before you can use this software, you must add the following command line to your “CONFIG.SYS” file on yoru boot disk: “Files = 20”. Add this line to your config.sys file, and then reboot your computer. This is a FATAL error. Saber RSS will abort to DOS on F2.

So I went ahead and added that line to my config.sys file, and it still doesnt help. THis is being run on a P3 1ghz system... Im creating the codeplug on this system, saving it, and then going to dump it into my saber on my radio laptop. THanks!

That computer is way too fast for Saber RSS.

That shouldnt matter though should it? Im not reading/writing, im only opening the program and making a codeplug.

It absolutely does matter. Some older RSS cannot be run at all on fast computers.

Try a slower computer..Chris

Yeah, be careful and just get a clunky 16MB or so 486 and use that for the programmer system. The software could lock up during a write function on the pentium and you'll have an expensive paper weight. Dont risk it!

Hi Matt! How many post have we seen by Monty & Elroy on programming the Saber? (over 50)? you know you need true DOS, on a 386/486 x 33 computer. A good RIB & cables! We plug our pc's into "APC-UPS" power back-up systems, cause we get unpredictable blackouts/brownouts here in AZ. The few times I wrote to the sabers, & we had a blackout, if that process gets interrupted, I've lost all my tuining values! And had to put it on a communications analyzer, & retune the audio/power,ect... whatever else goes off! and thats a pain...Ed

ATTENTION: READ MY POST AGAIN, and be SURE of what it says before posting comments like that.

My post says I will NOT be using a Pentium 1ghz for programming, only to write the codeplug and save time. I will then put the codeplug on a floppy, and dump the codeplug to the saber on my 386 programming laptop. Calm down and read it again before jumping to conclusions.

I am calm Matt, myself & a few other had no sucess writeing a codeplug on a P3 (from your post on top) & putting it on a floppy & into a 386. But maybe it will work for you? I always said. "motorola" Like walking thru a minefield. later Ed

Good answer ED.

Through my experience with RSS, I have found a 486/66 and around 16MB RAM to be the most effecient. Still have some problems with it being too fast for the HT600's etc. And not enough memory for the Astro/Spectra RSS.

Even a plain jain 1st generation P75 was way to fast. too many runtime errors etc.

I'd suggest what the others have agreed on... stick with a 386 or 486. Just another example of Motorola's lack of foresight and planning. Good luck.

By the way... has anyone ever wondered why the MT1000 16 channel can have scan, but the Saber can't? Just a little bit of difference in price. You'd think that it could be done.

Please keep in mind, ITS A SOFTWARE ISSUE.

Pentiums did not even EXSIST at the time Sabers were designed, and as a result they
did not write the code for faster OS's.

Even if you were able to " Build " , "Open"
the RSS and get to the menu Screens, you
still would risk your radio when / if you
tried to write to it even " If " you had a code plug built with a faster computer and
then used in a 386-486-25

ALL it takes is just ( 1 bite ) out of place
and boom

Not meaning to sound rough, but its like some
of the Older Windows 3.1 / Windows 95 programs are just not compatable with Windows
98, ME, or the like.

I have many favorite Win 95 business programs I like,and they just will not work on Win 98 or later OS's....( and they should )

Motorola DOS type Programs are just not compatable with the Later OS's or the faster
series computers.( unless written for them )

Using Mo'slo, Optional files, you take a big
risk....I mean why make Motorola more money?

Many have had favorable sucess with "some "
pentiums, however its not a matter of " If ", it will happen sooner or later, and ( I ) along with perhaps others are just trying to save ya the grief...

Been there, done that already.

And, well, if needed, I am able to restore
most of them if you should corrupt the radio.

Play it safe, there are Millions of 386's-486's still out there, and why clutter up
or Risk your later version Windows OS with a
DOS program written by Humans...The later OS
stuff is written by Aliens, and they don't
mix with Humans very well.

Restoring the OS on a computer is just as much of a headache.
