Voice Logging

Post by Radio_Cowboy »

OK,

At work our site has a 10 channel 800 mhz (F**K you nexthell) Kenwood LTR system with 80 some talkgroups for the entire site. I am suggesting that we voice record our ERT talkgroups, so that when/if something happens, everything that happens during the response will be documented. (I'm surprised they aren't already doing this, actually)

I'm not a dispatcher, and not at all familiar how this works... What I'm looking for is information on a radio logging system for at least 4 talkgroups on the system. I would assume that everything is digital logged anymore.....no reel to reels or anything like that, correct?

Also curious as to what it takes to interface to the system.... Our command center operates off Kenwood mobiles on power supplys with desk mic's and mag mount antennas stuck on top of the file cabinets in the back of the room. I am guessing we would need one dedicated mobile per talkgroup which we want to record.

Can anyone give me any equipment suggestions? I need to sell this idea to the powers that be, and would like to have my ducks in a row.

Thanks!

Yea, it's all digital. We are looking at getting a new system to replace our aging Racal Dat tape system. A new DVD based digital recorder system quote was several thousand I think. I can't remember the exact figure but I can tell you when I get back to the office tommorow.

eBay at it's finest:
Me: "What exactly is a 900Mhz UHF CB?"
Them: "A very nice CB at 900Mhz speed!"

Easiest way would be to use dedicated mobiles or portables and just tap off of the speaker port. I can't vouch for them but here is one supplier that seems to have the low end logging market in mind (price, ETC..)http://omnicronelectronics.com/

just a note regarding liability... If this is a CYA system, check into the various recording methods...different manufacturers use different digital recording formats...some are more "tamper-proof" than others (recognized by the courts)

Just about everyone around here uses these guys:

Probably overkill for what you're looking to do. And yes, you would want a dedicated base radio for each talkgroup you wish to record. Unless you have some sort of dispatching console that you can TX/RX these 4 talkgroups on, then you could log off of that.
