Anybody ever successfully removed the whole
knob/flex assembly from the case w/o destroying it? Bought some replacement cases
and they have the wrong !@#$%&* connector on
the flex. I repeat, !@#$%&*!

Tnx,

Yes, I have.

Pop the knobs themselves off with a small flat bladed screwdriver. You will see that the nylon control retainer holds the shaft of the control in grooves. Let that be for now.

Carefully pry off the black plastic cover behind the knobs, from inside the front housing. You will see the slots in the white plastic part where the black cover latches in.

Next, remove the two green metal flex connector retainers, one on each side of the radio. On the accessory connector, you have to pry up the tabs gently to move it up.

Remove the screw that holds the speaker retaining strap.

Go back to the knobs. Use two screwdrivers to remove the concentric switch ring. One pries from underneath, while the other (a very small screwdriver) pries the nylon tabs away from the control shaft.

The nylon shaft support for the volume control is best removed by prying its shaft tabs away far enough that the support can be pulled off. It's nylon, so it'll take the abuse and can still be reused.

Now you go back to the inside of the housing and gently pull the controls out. It's not necessary to remove the entire control block from the housing, but if you want to (it may be safer for the control flex) then first, you don't remove the black plastic control cover (second paragraph) but leave it where it is, and then you insert a screwdriver and pry the housing away from the control block on each side. It's tricky, but it can be done.

Reassemble in reverse order.
