APCO P25 Phase II Quantar Photos, or ASTRO on Steroids!

Post by ASTROMODAT »

P25 Phase II "Qunatarish?" Or is it simply a TETRA repeater? Or is it "ASTRO on steroids?" Interesting...

Well, I think if you stick whatever firmware in this thing it could be many different types. The FCC ID is relitivly new. Might be a Software Defined Radio.

Looks like an experiment brewing..............

I was sort of kidding about the guy's creative eBay ad.

I believe it is simply a TETRA repeater (off-shore product, actually in Europe, and it is not available in the USA), so it's not really anything that special. His ad is pretty hilarious, albeit if it is a TETRA repater, I have no idea if it could be configured for anything commercial in the USA (e.g., I don't know if it is Part 90 Type Accepted).

If you Google the model number you will get a couple of hits in Spanish. Apparently it is a repeater - obviously not a domestic market product.

It is an interesting looking piece. For a couple hundred bucks I might even be fool enough to buy it to see what I could do with it - but 2 grand is way to serious for something you probably can't even get the RSS for, let alone make it do something useful.

Although it is at first sight very interesting, once you look closer, it's not so remarkable. For instance, it looks like it is using the same P/S as the Quantar, and the overall size and volume appear to be the same as the existing Quantar, only with a different layout. The big issue is the software, which is an unknown factor. I agree that his price is high for a fun experimenting box.

This is an Iden base station, and is very similar to the 6.x 700/800MHz Simulcast base station and 700MHz Intellisite Repeater (6.x uses a different control board than Iden and only a single channel receiver). Check out the STR3000 spec sheet - it shows the SZ6.x version.

This one won't do anything useful without a site controller...

The Tetra-net uses a special version of the Quantar. The system it self is in fact based on the Apco25 protocol but made for different public services using digital trunk systems outside the US.

The base stations M. uses here is in fact a modified Quantar just with special software. I know of some they had from the US but never implanted due to limited use of the system (the cops wouldn´t accept being hooked up on a trunk net with other users) so M. returned some units with the original software. Meaning M. was able to create a Quantar that fit the US market that´s why they sent them back.

That´s all I know about it. Maybe it helps
