Finished install in 2K s10

Post by N2ZPY »

I finished the main install in my 2000 S-10 ZR2 yesterday. I already had the IC-706 MkIIG set up on HF - 440. I added the TK-690/790 with dual heads. The main head is installed in the front for everyday use. This head will eventually be upgraded to the advanced head. The second head was set up on the 3rd door for use on scene.

The antennas are a fender mounted 2M/440, a 102" stainless whip on the rear pass corner tied to an auto tuner for 6M and HF and the Tk-690/790 is set up with a roof mounted "drilled" highband maxrad and a 6M "hamstick" that is tuned to 46.22 on the rear driver side.

That door mounted control head is pretty cool. I never would have thought of that!! I guess as long as it isn't raining...

The radio on the second door is a nice touch. I'm surprised the idea hasn't surfaced before now.

The lowband and HF mounts on the rear were designed and built by me. I have been very happy with them.

Nice work on those brackets. I tried looking earlier and got an error. Got them ok tonight though.

I'm going with a big ball on the outside of the bed for my HF antenna, but I have a thing for ball mounts LOL. But yours looks good too.

Good luck.

Your opinion

I have a 94 s-10

I have been thinking about doing the ball mount think on the right rear side of the bed

any thoughts on that good or bad?

Yes Seth, my only thought is you should put it on the left side. Less likely to encounter low hanging object to smack to antenna on that way. I don't know if there's really that much difference, but it seems the further from the curb, the better.

That's what I've always considered when I put my taller antennas on the driver's side.

And this Motorola ball mount is cool. It's got teeth that keep it from turning on the mounting bolt. I've had lots of ball mounts and never seen that before. That's what I get for using cheap stuff.

Good luck.

Oh hell I've been running 5/8 larsens on 2m's forever-they always hit stuff. I can only imagine what a 1/2 wave 6 meter whip will do. I just have the "near the gas cap" paranoia.

same think I have man. I got mine about 14 year ago when I had a '71 chevelle. Now I am finally going to use it

I'll post pics

Well I got to put this system to the test the other night. I responded to a 1 car rollover with 2 ejected in a neighboring district the other night......long story about our lousy 911 system and them sending all the fire/EMS units to the wrong end of the district. It was very nice not having to keep climbing in and out of the truck to use the radio. Worked like a champ!

System??? I was 4 miles line of site to the tower with 110 watts on 46.060 and they wouldn't answer me. I hate to say it but our whole 911 system in this county is a joke.

Our FD highband repeater worked like a champ though. I am so glad that I convinced them to spend the $$$ on it.

Fair enough... but since it's a neighboring county to me I won't go into it here. You know how to get a hold of me... I have some stories if you want a good laugh.
