QUANTAR REPLACEMENT?

Post by Radiogeek97 »

GUYS

have any of you heard any further grumblings about the release of the quantar replacement? I am trying to get a new repeater for our department, and before i start the politics/budjet game, i was wondering if there was any further news on this "new" machine. We are not in dire need of a new quantar yet so I can hold off for a while, it just takes the administration a while to get warmed up to spending money. take care

I haven't seen anything official yet. Apparently this new base station product line will replace both the Quantar and the STR3000.

The STR3000 is used in Smartzone 6x simulcast systems. It was developed off the IDEN fixed station product platform rather than the Quantar because of the need for linear PA operation to handle the complex modulation format.

The one new product will be available for any system platform, analog, P25 standalone, or simulcast. That should offer Motorola savings compared to two separate high tier platforms.

When is is introduced, there will probably be a period where it is only available in certain configurations [i.e. 800 MHz only]. That is typical for Motorola with new products. If might be a while before Quantar is discontinued completely.

I wonder if the new base station will use a newer operating system platform for the RSS/CPS. Maybe they will move up to Win 3.1.

The STR3000 and Quantar Intellisite repeaters program with a package called CSS that runs under the latest Windows. That's the type of software you would expect Motorola to provide when the new station arrives.

Our system of Quantar Intellisite repeaters (smartZone 4.1) that were installed last year use DOS based RSS. No windows pachage available at this time.

You don't have IntelliSite repeaters, you have IntelliRepeaters. Subtle difference, but the IntelliRepeater has been available for some time, is used in Smartzone 3.X and 4.X systems, and programs with the standard DOS based Quantar RSS.

IntelliSite repeaters are part of Smartzone 6.X systems and program with CSS, as does the STR3000. The difference between these stations is that the STR3000 is used at simulcast SZ6X sites due to its capability for LSM [Linear Simulcast Modulation], whereas the IntelliSite repeater is used at single site Smartzone nodes that are connected to SZ6X IP based infrastructure.
