GR1225 Repeater

Post by Larry »

I was hoping for an opinion on the GR-1225 repeater. I'm considering the 40 watt with built-in duplexer for a GMRS repeater. Is this a quality unit and is it reliable? Can a linear amp be used on this type repeater?

Larry,
The R1225 is a quality unit and is reliable if you do not run the transmitter 'balls out'.

The "built-in" duplexer is just a notch-notch version and does not protect against any other stations on a busy RF site. OK
if you are all by yourself.

Yes, you can reduce the TX power to 10 watts to drive a power amp, but you are only allowed 50 watts MAX on GMRS, usally measured at the output of the transmitter.

The R1225 chassis by itself is one very good repeater, you do not need the front pannel/display either.

I mount a 'naked" R1225 chassis with the heatsink facing up for better cooling and the duplexer on a rack pannel or even a plywood back board. See simmular setup at http://www.webimaging.com/echocomm/images/rptrrk.jpg

with two Radius/Maxtrac radios.

Amplifiers for FM use are not linear, they typically operate in class C for best efficiency. Also, the build in duplexer is only rated for 50 Watts maximum, ruling out the use of an amplifier in this case.

1225 repeater

The 1225 is a fine unit, BUT, after 20 years of repeater building, I've found that the Vertex VXR7000 is a great value (proformance+features+options+relibility/cost=value) 16 pl/dpl, a lot of I/O's for controllers, heavy duty cast alum heatsink, lots of local control buttons and lights (always nice for trouble shooting), big local speaker, heavy duty N connectors, built-in battery backup, ect.... and available for under $1200. I have a one that I've been thinking about putting up as a grms, but I don't think I'll have time this year. So if you want it $950 with internal duplexer.
