Just playing with DES/xl idea in some radios that pass thru here and was curious.. I know these radios lose their key with power loss, etc, but do the modules "default" to a certain encryption or when the key is lost, they simply transmit in clear?? In other words, if these DES/XL modules default to some value, but still remain pseudo-encrypted, there would never be a need for a keyloader for someone just playing with encryption.
Is that true or shut up and buy a loader...?
thanks!

I know in the Astro Saber, You can set it for "Infinite Key Retention". So, if you take the battery off, no big deal. If you have a channel set for Secure TX only, it will "Booooooo" with PTT if no valid key loaded. If its set for Clear OR Secure with the rocker, you can talk on clear. Yeah, the key is either loaded with the KVL, or its lost esentially-- "zeroized".
Is this accurate guys? Thanks..JM
