Astro Saber II and encryption question

Post by mancow »

First, I'll preface this by saying I haven't really followed the Astro technology as I should have. Everthing P25 capable I've ever owned has been EFJ or RACAL until now. Id did some searching but didn't resove my issue. So....here it goes.

I have an Astro Saber II H04KDF9PW7AN

5.01.02
6.04.09

NTN11153D encryption module installed

I'm trying to set this up for simple DES analog encryption. However, everytime I engage the secure mode it transmits an encrypted digital (astro) signal. I can hear that it's encrypted on the Pro-96.

I've scoured the programming setup but I'm not seeing what I'm doing wrong. I seem to recall a similar issue when I had an older astro saber (vselp) model in the past. I don't recall what was done to correct it now since it has been years ago.

BTW, I do have a T-3011DX loader.

Again, I'm just wanting to operate in plain old analog DES.

Nevermind  HUA syndrome.

Selecting mixed mode receive forces the secure mode to operate in astro.

I'm glad I'm not alone!

I always thought that to operate secured astro you needed an OFB module.

What exactly is OFB then if the radio managed to encrypt an astro signal with a simple 1153 DES module installed?

I never would have guessed it either. I had checked everything else and that was the last thing to try.

well, if I remember, I think we talked about it before, what ofb was for, if I remember right, it was from one of us that said it, but I think when motorola came out with those DES-XL module, they did not think that it would acutally work in Astro mode, so they came out with the OFB one, that is made for it, and I guess we all found out by trial that DES-XL does work in Astro mode, and u dont need OFB, unless you have it already.....

That or its one of motorola typical scheme, to make money, buy saying those modules dont work, buy that OFB one...... one of those reason :P

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

Is there any sort of work around? I would love to have that enabled in our radio's at work, and obviously it doesn't work (mixed mode setup). We are running DVP-XL, and still has the same problem (even though there is only that DES-XL checkbox)
