problems reading an astro saber
I have an Astro Saber H04DC9PW5AN AND 6.5 rss AND A Pollaris RIB box and an older computer (maybe 486) I get a protocol error when I goto read the radio. Is it the speed of the computer? Wrong RSS?
..
rib and or cable.
your software is VERY old too

make sure that your cable is for an ASTRO saber, not an analog one..
also as batdude said, you probably will want to invest in the latest CPS, as using the DOS RSS, once you get the right cable, you may still get "codeplug too new for this application" meaning someone programmed it with a later version of software than the dos RSS

astro programming
I did amke the change on the cable pin 8 to 6. I was hoping to at least get the "too old" error but net even that. I have used the rib to programm my III but the old computer I was using died and I am have yet to find a working 286/8080 to program my old saber and syntor x9000. I am not sure on the vintage of the computer that I have now to program. I guess I will look into that more.
Thanks Tom
Thanks Tom
OK I now have newer software. It runs on my 850Mhz computer but gives me a packet error. I suspect it is too fast and when I unplug the radio I get a bus timeout error. I load the software on the old machine which is a true IBM and I get a bus timeout error. Now the IBM I have to use a gender changer I seem to recall problems whith that but it has been a long time since I really had to fool with that stuff. I do have the correct port com1( I assumne) the computer is a IBM PS/2 model 57 SLC.
Anythoughts?

astro saber prog.
Now wait a second first I get a protocol error from my computer that is 350Mhz pent. and then a buss error from my 386 20Mhz. Which is it too fast or too slow? But I suspect that the radio is too new for the software. I should have newer software soon.
I need to stop programming radios at5 2:30am I make too many mistakes.
Thanks
Tom

Use the pentium 350. It will work fine. (I use 750Mhz, 500Mhz, 3.0GHz for programming them.. in DOS)
As long as you are in a true DOS mode, it's better to use a faster computer with Astro stuff in DOS. When you change RX mode type (for example) it won't take forever to adjust and repack before allowing you to go the next item to adjust.
It's either the rib or the cable.
If the software is too old, the radio would still read, however the software would give you "codeplug too new" error after reading and unpacking it.
Serial Bus error usually means the RSS can't find the RIB.
Protocol Entry error usually means a cable or radio problem.
(Note the word "usually"...)

Still problems
Could it be that the old Saber cable I rewired will not work right? I see some mention of a rs232 cable. Is this only for the CPS software or do the newer Sabers use this cable? I used to be up on all this stuff but have not worked in Schumburg for a while and the radios I have all program with the box and cables I have.

p on s
Yes it did using my old 286 lap top and old software. Then I did rewire the cable 8 to 6 so that it would work on the astro as shown in the batlabs pages.
What is an "RS232" cable for Saber?

Ignore that for now....
Am I under the assumption that the polaris ribs sometimes use a different pin-out than normal cables?
Perhaps the pin difference between regular and astro saber is NOT pin 6 to pin 8 for polaris ribs.
Have you previously programmed any astro sabers with the rib and modified cable?

problems oh problems
I like older equipment I understand old stuff better. I guess since I am getting old I understand my self better.
To me Saber Astro is FBM I have a basic grock of some of the issues.
No I have no programmed an Astro Saber before. Yes I havew programmed my Saber III with it. I did not blow iot up. I have a copy of 8.5 just need to figure out on how to load it.
But in the end I will go over to the local gov radio shop where these came from and get them to teach me had to do it. These radios belong to then so I may fooliish assumne that they can program them.\
Thanks the only other thing I keed is a msf5000 tray or make me an offer on what I have. UHF 110w and free of charge I will tune it if you send me the contol tray I will tune and you can say that a exmotorlin ftr tuned it. Any interested let me know I will send picts.
