FCC's Rebanding Decision

Post by Hoseman292 »

I recently read where the FCC's rebanning decision. For many agencies that are APCO compliant, does this decision mean simply reprogramming or radio replacement?

Here's a link to the decision:

Thanks guys,

Thanks Seth. Let me try another link from the periodical.
This one should take you to the main page.

This link should take you to a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation.

Imagine how much 800 MHz used P25 ASTRO Spetras/XTL5k's and XTS3k/5k's will drop in price, at least for those agencies switching over to the new 700 band. Won't help Hams, though, as I have yet to see a working 902-928 MHz IMBE radio. Sigh...

All of the later model radios (i.e.MTS, XTS, MT series, etc.) will have to touched due to the rebanding effort which will require the re-numbering of all of the 806 to 809/851 to 854 channels. The radios will have to be re-flashed with the new channel assignments so they work properly in a trunked environment when assigned a channel.

The LTS and LCS series radios don't have enough memory to accept the reprogramming and will be replaced on NEXTEL's dime according to "M".

Being APCO compliant doesn't have any bearing on it. It's the systems that are currently in the NPSPAC band (821 to 823/866 to 869 channels) that are specificially affected.

I was thinking that there may be a certain number of radios that will have to be replaced, for those agencies that either voluntarily choose or otherwise get forced to slide down to 700 MHz. That's where I was thinking we might see some high tier radios show up for good prices.

Ahh, crap. If this happens in my area, my XTS (used strictly for monitoring purposes) will become useless. Guess I better start saving for a crappy digital scanner.....

Charlie,
This is what I was getting to when I created the thread. My department went digital a little over a year ago with a HUGE system. I'm curious to how they will be affected.

Here is further information on our system:

So, when this goes that means all the current trunking scanners that aren't flash upgradable will be useless to, right?

They wouldn't think they would be able to follow the new channel format for Motorola trunking. It shouldn't make a difference with edacs unless it's 700 Mhz. ??????

Anybody in the metro-Boston area know if this will affect the Mass state PD, or Massport? I think the city of cambridge is affected but not sure of the others.

Soo much for my 2 bc-780's if they change over :(

They are a NPSPAC system and will be relocated to new channel assignments 15 MHz. below where they are right now. It will be affected the same way as my HUGE system. 8)

Anyone know if this will apply to radios on 9600 BPS systems? I'm thinking not, because of the way they use a base freq. and calculate the channel from there. And the system sends a Channel Identifier message over the air with the parameters needed (base freq/tx offset, etc.) to tell the radios how to calculate the channels. Also, the typical base freq. for the 800 systems is 851.00625.

Anyone know for sure?

Of course the radios will need new CCs programmed in. I'm just talking about the Host upgrade part.
