Antennas for XTS5000 VHF

Post by n9upc »

Looking at getting a different antenna for my XTS5000. I current am using a HT1000 antenna on it, but since I have been hoping in the future Mrs. car and she does not have any room for radios and for that reason does not want one I need to come up with a plan.

I was thinking of getting an SMA to BNC connector for the portable. That way I can slap a mag mount antenna on the roof and run the cable into the car. Then when I am getting out of the car I can get a BNC style antenna to put on it.

However, I tried purchasing a stubby VHF SMA antenna before and found that even though it was SMA it did not make a connection and I could not receive or transmit worth a crap.

Anyone run into this problem with the XTS SMA connector before??? I went back to the parts vendor where I purchased it and showed them and they gave me another antenna but it did the same thing and the antenna was listed as working on Motorola SMA connectors. However, when I put the HT1000 antenna on it works great???

A regular SMA antenna will NOT work on the Jedi/XTS/GTX/etc handhelds. You need the special Motorola SMA, commonly called an SF, connector. It is like an SMA except the dielectric is even with the thread shroud.

I have many antennas with the SF connector if you are looking for one. Surf on over to the Handheld Antenna Selection Matrix and look on the row labeled "SF". Any of those antennas will work with your XTS5000.

If you are looking for a VHF stubby, then I would recommend the Centurion EXS-150-SF. It's 150-162MHz, about 4" long, and will work perfectly on your XTS5000. I can also get other bandsplits if you need them,

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks!

I have used that VHF stubby for quite a while and I have been really happy with it. Of course, it doesnt pertform nearly as well as the wideband antenna but unless the the radio is sitting on my desk its well worth it not to get poked constantly.

The Visar VHF antenna works really well on the 2500/3000/5000.

Why not get a hidden antenna, like a Sti-CO for her car. Would be in the Am?FM and she would never see it.

It is not that she does not want an antenna on her car it is that she does not have room for a radio in the car.

I also was just looking for a quick disconnect for the XTS and I wanted to go with the BNC style quick disconnect.
