XTL 5K question

Post by jim »

I am install an external mic and speaker to the rear connector of an XTL5000 800 digital and have never installed any accessories to one of these before. I have the harness built and ready to install.

My question is: I have to read and write this radio in order to perform audio gain adjustments. When doing this, will I disturb the encryption keys or any other data by reading and re-writing it? I know that some other model radios will "dump" the system key when you perform a read. BTW, we're using CPS 5.0

Also, is a KVL used to program the keys in these radios like some older models? These are a radio that has never been used in our area, so it's all new to me!

What radios do you own?: X9000 thru APX

XTL5000 works much of the same way as the Astro Spectra line...

If they didn't enable the infinate key retention, the key is most likely lost already.

Read/writing should effect anything unless you change it! :)

You still need a DX loader or better to drop a new key in the radio.

"infinite retention" IS checked. So from what you are saying, everything should be okay to read and write to make my audio adjustments?

Yep...assuming no 'bugs' in the still quite new firmware...

I've reprogrammed several XTS-5k's and a few XTL's, all encrypted. Like Pj said, as long as I had "infinite key retention" checked, I haven't had many problems. I have had more radios that I would expect lose encryption shortly after program changes. On the whole, though, it was only a small percentage.
