Benefits of Smart Rib versus Standard Rib

What are the benfits of having/using a smart rib with an astro saber and astro spectra versus using just a regular rib. I am talking for the normal programmer.

I am thinking of doing some "playing" with these radios but does one need a smart rib to do that or does a regular rib work?

If you're just playing around so to speak, you'll be fine with a regular RIB. The Smart RIB is needed to Flash upgrade radios.
