well, My radio that has host 5.52.00/dspn 6.04.00 works fine! however my other radio that has 7.05.00/7.03.00 does not work at all! I was told there is some sort of upgrade utility for the xtva, but nobody has advised me were to get it done.

According to Motorola all versions should work. We have successfully used XTS3500's dating back to 2001 and also used XTS5000's with current version 5 firmware recently delivered.

Don't forget to check in the radio's software that you setup the HHCH. There is a place for this. I think it is under "Radio Wide" options. If proper settings are not selected for the controls on the HHCH through the programming software, the unit may not operate properly. We've had that experience, too.
