Is CPS or DOS-RSS for Astro Saber available to "civilia

I'm sorry if this topic has been covered already, but wondering if Motorola will sell a " civilian " , that is and individual who is neither a Certified Motorola shop nor technician either the Windows based CPS or the DOS based RSS software to program the digital Astro Saber 800 trunking radio series?

I want to make a completely legal and above board purchase if that's allowed. Any thoughts on what either version might cost ?

Assuming the Astro Saber could accept either CPS or older RSS, is one type more practical and safer to use than the other ?

Well, you're not going to be able to buy RSS anymore.

They will sell you CPS after you agree by signing their license agreement in red ink.

As long as the market you live in/near isn't flooded with dealers/shops that have the CPS already, they'll sell it to you.

It's also nice to get the updates through MOL as soon as they come out and not having to wait for the disk to come in the mail.

It just jumped to $410 if you get the dual version that covers the portable and mobile.

Also, the MOL updates are sometimes not only nice, but necessary. For example, for the older ASTRO Spectra mobile and the XTS-3000 portable CPS, the Product Team made a decision some time ago to NOT up-issue the last two CPS updates for these radios via a physical CD being mailed out to those folks who purchased their original CPS within less than three years ago, so you MUST uplift via MOL. I prefer to have both avenues, but as is the case here, this is no longer an option for certain CPS up-issues. I suspect this has to do with the fact that these radios are at the end of their life cycles, as I have not seen this to be the case with the CPS for the XTS-5000, nor the XTL-5000.

Thanks for the information on the CPS and RSS. I presume " MOL " is Motorola On Line, but have never been to there site though I will try now.

Is the CPS also available from local Motrola dealers or do they only sell you the CPS if you are not close enough to an authroized Motorola service shope ?

Astro CPS can be ordered by the common man. The PRO series CPS is restricted however.

The CPS is only available from Motorola direct, not through dealers. If you do happen to find a dealer who sells it (I've heard of it happening over the years), it's not legal.

Years ago, Motorola Service Shops (MSS) that were outright directly owned by Motorola were allowed to sell RSS to their big customers, and that's where we bought ours. Any more, CPS is ONLY available via MOL. The normal procedure is to have your Motorola sales guy authorize you for CPS purchase on MOL, AND to sign the CPS license agreement on line.

My understanding (and I may be wrong) is that Motorola very recently (a month or two ago) effectively canceled CPS license agreements that had been done in writing, and required all of these customers to sign new CPS agreements on line. You can imagine how shocked I was to go on MOL only to find that I had no CPS license agreement! I've had a continuous RSS/CPS license agreement in place for maybe 25+ years now.

As I understand it (and I may be wrong) the on line CPS license agreement is essentially the same as the old written CPS license agreement, but you must sign it on line ONLY. We had just renewed our license agreement maybe 6 months or so ago in writing, only to find on MOL that we no longer had our license. We simply immediately renewed it on line. I called Motorola and asked why we were shown with no license, and they explained that they essentially canceled the former written agreements, and required all customers to put in place the new agreement, but only on line via MOL.

I may not be explaining things quite right here, but the jist I got was that we had to re-do it on line. All is now well, I can gladly report, and it took but a few minutes to do this. I think we were OK within a day or so of submitting the on line application.

Well, I certainly do qualify as the Common Man and not the Pro.

It seems that a buyer must have a salesperson vouch for the buyer in order for Motorola to consider the sale.

I do know that there has been great upheaval over the Morotola programming software. I want to follow the legal and legit path.

What the he!!. Doesn't that seem abit odd? It's not like the "common man" is going to have a need for Astro software, but it seems that the "common man" would have a need for the PRO series. Take a semi-large Taxi company for example. I'd imagine they'd use CDM-750's before an XTL5000...

The common man tends to screw up the PRO series stuff much more than the ASTRO stuff. That's why after the first year they change the distrubition of PRO CPS.

There are about 150 common men with PRO series stuff for every man with an ASTRO. Selling ASTRO stuff directly isn't going to hurt local dealers who don't deal in P25 gear, either.
