2005 Ford Explorer Installation
I just done with an installation of emergency equipment and radios in a 2005 Ford Explorer and we just noticed a ford safety feature. When the vehicle is running and driver exists the vehicle and locks the door, the doors do not lock. Has anyone else ran across this problem, if so how do you disable this feature. I will post the pictures of the install shortly. Thanks Richard
OK.. the 2005 Explorer Manual I have online says this is the AutoLock feature.. (see pg. 85 in the manual)
Explorer Manual wrote:Autolock (if equipped)
This feature will automatically lock all the doors when:
• all the doors are closed,
• the ignition is in the 4 (ON) position,
• the gearshift lever is shifted into, then out of, R (Reverse) and then
• the brake pedal is released.
This feature will also automatically relock all the doors when:
• the ignition is in the 4 (ON) position and any door is opened then
closed, and
• you put the vehicle in motion by releasing the brake pedal.

Your vehicle comes with the autolock feature activated. To
deactivate/reactivate this feature:
1. Turn the ignition to the 3 (OFF) position.
2. Close all the doors.
3. Enter the 5-digit entry code.
4. Press and hold the 7 • 8. While holding the 7 • 8, press the 3 • 4
within five seconds.
5. Within 5 seconds of Step 4, release the 3 • 4.
6. Within 5 seconds of Step 5, Release the 7 • 8.
The horn will chirp once when the system has been successfully
deactivated.
The horn will chirp twice (one short and one long chirp) when the
system has been successfully reactivated.

3. Note: Steps 4 through 8 must be carried out within 30 seconds. Turn
the ignition from the 3 (OFF) to the 4 (ON) position.
4. Press the power door locks (unlock) control three times.
5. Turn the ignition lock from the 4 (ON) to the 3 (OFF) position.
6. Press the power door locks (unlock) control three times.
7. Turn the ignition from the 3 (OFF) to the 4 (ON) position.
8. Ensure the vehicle’s horn chirps. This chirp indicates the feature is in
an enable/disable mode and ready to accept program changes.
9. Press the power door locks (unlock) control once, then the
(lock) control once, in order to toggle the autolock feature.
10. Ensure that the horn chirps once; there should only be one horn
chirp, indicating that the autolock feature has been deactivated. If one
chirp is heard, followed by a longer sound of the horn, the autolock
feature has been reactivated.
11. Turn the ignition to the 3 (OFF) position, or wait two minutes, in
order to exit the enable/disable mode.
12. Exit the vehicle and ensure the horn chirps once to indicate that a
feature has been changed and the autolock feature has been toggled.
AutoLock != Smart Locks.
AutoLocks will automatically cause the doors to lock when all doors are closed and the vehicle moves forward at >10MPH.
Smart locks are designed so, should the keys be in the ignition and you punch the door locks, the driver door is automatically unlocked to prevent you from locking your keys in a running vehicle.
I have no clue on the Explorers, but the Super Duties have the same Smart Lock feature. I disabled the key-in-ignition warning chime by taping over the appropriate contacts on the lock cylinder, and that also killed the smart lock ******** (I've got keypad entry as well, so it's unpossible to lock my keys in the truck). The same thing may work on an Exploder.

aha...
Sorry, there's nothing more on this feature. So try using the key fob or the remote entry keypad to lock, or maybe just dip the plunger to lock. Basically lock it via any means but the power door lock button to see if will still unlock.Explorer RHD Manual, 1st Printing wrote: Smart unlocking feature
The smart unlocking feature helps prevent you from locking yourself out
of the vehicle. With the key in any ignition position, the driver’s door will
automatically unlock if it is locked using the power lock control on the
driver’s door panel while the driver’s door is open.
The remote control usually is disabled while the ignition is "on." This prevents some morons from doing thngs like setting the panic alarm off as a siren, opening the trunk while moving, etc.
The "feature" you describe protects you from lockng your keys in as tvsjr said above. Once the door is closed I imagine you may be able to lock the doors from the outside with the key. Worth a try and assures that you have a key to reopen it with.

Had this same problem on my 2004 Ford Explorer (work vehicle). Wanted to be able to lock it while running on the side of the road... The easiest solution I have found is I have the remote on a seperate ring that is on my belt. When I get out and shut the door, lock it using the remote. This will lock all the doors, unlike when you use the door panel which will lock them all, then instantly unlock the drivers door.

I have a 2004 Expedition..which has the same features... If you want to lock the door while the veh. is running..... i have found that using the keypad is easiest. Pressing the last two buttons together will 'lock' the door.. running or not. When you close the door and the veh is on, simply press the two keys together.. it WILL lock. you must use the keyless entry or a spare key/transmitter to get back in.
ILuvXMRadio's solution works on my '00 explorer.
