TX Audio Very "Bassy".. XTS5k Model 3 VHF

Post by ILuvXMRadio »

I just got an XTS5k VHF Model 3 with the info below...

H18KEH9PW7AN
500008-000002-9
DSP R05.01.00
Firmware R05.01.01

I am on a 'direct' frequency just getting the new radio setup for some conventional channels and I'm noticing that the model 3 sounds much bassier than my 5k VHF Model 1 on Transmitt. The RX audio seems to be fine and both portables. They basically match.. but.. I'm somewhat irritated that my TX audio on the model 3 sounds so deep.

I have verified that on both models the TX settings are the same in 'TX Audio per mode in Radio Wide'... All Analog, Digital, Secure using AGC and AGC output is 6 and the Noise suppression is checked. now see this sounds great on the TX audio from the Model 1, but not the model 3.

Anyone have any suggestions? Not sure if there is something easy I'm missing (as usual, probably so).. but thought I would ask the gang here.

Thanks!!

:-? Jonathan.

Is pre-emphasis enabled?

I haven't come across this issue with the XTS5000 in particular, but in the global tuning software there should be a 'compensation balance' adjustment, which basically is meant to balance the high & low end frequencies. Perhaps it is set a little low. Take note of what it's currently set to, because if you change it too much it can attenuate your PL/DPL/low-speed data, but it can definitely make the radio sound less 'bassy'.

Excellent.. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion. They odd thing is.. operating under an ASTRO modulation, it sounds fine. Just weird really...

Todd, How much should I change? I was reading the helpfile in the tuner, and since I dont have a service monitor, I wanted to take a second look / just a check for my own sake to see what you would recommend the amount of change be? Currently.. through the difference frequncies the values are ...

33
37 - 144ish (transmit mostly)
36 - 154ish.. (transmit mostly)
34 - 160ish .. (transmit less, but some).
32
34

I know you cant say for sure, but any suggestions in amount to go up before some of the problems start to happen?

Now keep in mind... I'm getting acceptable sound quality from the digital conventional channels.. (not sure if thats helpful or not).
Thanks.

I checked again.. and i'm glad I didnt change the tuning values... I indeed did NOT have Transmit Emphasis on for that Conventional Personality.

Thanks RKG for making me look again... Sounds much better.

I have observed that often when you use the utility to add more personalities, they default to pre-emphasis off, and if you're moving quickly, you don't notice and fix it, with this result. It is, I'm sad to report, a mistake I've made more than once. Glad it worked for you.
