Syntor X disabling encryption
I looked at that other site dedicated to the Syntors, but could not locate (or maybe I saw it but didnt recognize that it was what I wanted) the info to disable encryption on a DVP Syntor X VHF unit. Is it one of those DVP jumpers listed on that other site? My radio model is T83VXJ.... and although the model number indicates that it has encryption, and it says DVP on the front of the radio, I have not keyed it up to see if encryption is still enabled on it or not.
These are regular Syntor X radios, not 9000. Are you sure about that? I have two of these with DVP and one without. The radios with DVP have an additional green colored board mounted directly under the personality boards, and the radio without DVP does not have that. That green board is part HLN4425A1.
There is a Syntor X DVP board inside the radio, i had one like that. However, what you have is not a DVP board, but an interface board.

The HLN4270A / HLN4270B / HLN4425A Interface Board can be used for a variety of options (EMS rear control group, Single Tone Encoder control head, MDC-600 control head retrofit and VHF 110/10 watt radios). If you do not have any these options then this Interface Board and its cable should be removed as it will interfere with normal conventional radio operation (jumpers may also need changing).

It is an interface board only. There is a family of these wired in so called DVP internal interface boards:

I say “so called” because they support other things besides DVP.
There is also the soldered in so called DVP internal interface board:

They all perform slightly different functions or combinations of interface functions.
All of these require external DVP, MDC-600, MVS-20, etc., external Sys90 enclosures with the appropriate circuit boards inside the external enclosure and special cables. There are also wiring and/or jumper changes inside the radio drawer (mostly to the Personality Board). Even the special Hand Held Control Head DVP models all have an external DVP housing:

I do not know of any Motorola manufactured Syntor X internal DVP boards. These did not arrive until the Syntor X 9000 series which is based on the Syntor X. There may be after market encryption boards that can be installed inside a Syntor X (however, the after market company can not call them DVP or Securenet without licensing from Motorola)?
If you have an HLN4270A, HLN4270B or HLN4425A interface board without any of the external equipment they support installed on the radio cable, then it is best to just remove them and re-jumper the Personality Board (keep in mind the 100/10 watt VHF radio requires one of these broads). If you have a HLN5008A then leave it alone (it is soldered in) and just re-jumper the personality board. As you can see in the block diagrams, JU8 needs to be installed when an interface board is removed/bypassed. Sometimes JU2 and other miscellaneous jumpers may need changing depending on the Personality Board model number.

The Syntor X radio drawer “VXJ” part of the model number only indicated the presence of an interface board (HLN4270A, HLN4270B, HLN4425A or HLN5008A) factory installed inside the radio. It does not mean the radio actually had any DVP or other external options installed on the external radio cabling. Of course, if you do not have one of the internal “VXJ” interface board, then none of the DVP, MDC-600, MVS-20, etc., options will work, even if they are installed on the radio cable.
