Building the hardware involved is not a problem (assuming you already have a RIB & cable for regular programming). You can find the info in the model specific pages on Batlabs:

http://www.batlabs.com/htpro.html

The trick is finding the firmware update programs to do it. They are only distributed to Authorised Motorola dealers. They used to be included on new CPS update CDs, but that stopped for CPS version 6.01.00 (firmware 3.xx.xx). Now they are only available to dealers on Motorola Online...current version is somewhere around 5.09.xx.

Most dealers will do it while you wait for a small fee.

And, if the radio is too old (which I think yours is), two flashes are required... first to a mid R02 release... then up to current, unless this has changed in later firmware releases.

R02 is dirt old. Time to update, definitely.

Todd,

How hard is it to build one of the flash adapters? Looks pretty easy... But what is up with that "boot control" Is that like an on/off switch or what? I have 2 or 3 1250's to upgrade from 4.00.01

Read the radio, then click on "Radio Information", under the General Tab will be your Firmware Version in the radio.

HT1250 Firmware

Post by WFD44 »

There are three different "items" that have version numbers that are sometimes confusing.

1) The version number of the Programming software (CPS)

2) The version number of the codeplug

3) The version number of the internal firmware of the radio

Hope this helps.

How do you put in a new firmware on this radio.
You take it to an /\/\ dealer. Call first. Not all of them are set up to do firmware updates. It takes 5 minutes if they know what they are doing.

The best deal I have found near us is $35 per radio. $700 for 20 radios!

Not hard at all. The boot control line is just a switch...you basically put the dongle in between the RIB & programming cable & start up the upgrade software. You start the procedure & it'll then prompt you to throw the switch & pull the battery off the radio (don't touch the radio power switch). Put the battery back on & the radio will appear to be dead, but is actually in 'bootstrap' mode. The software will then continue & complete the upgrade.

No, only 1.xx.xx radios needed to have a 'different' flash. Motorola used to make 2 versions of every firmware upgrade...one to go from 1.xx.xx to whatever, and one to use from 2.xx.xx to whatever. That stopped at the upgrade to 5.00.03...ever since then, there's only the upgrade to work from 2.xx.xx. I guess they figured there were no more 1.xx.xx radios out there.

HT1250 Firmware

No.

In fact, once it's loaded you can not reload it or go back to a previous version.

That is why it's not recommended to upgrade firmware just because there is a new version.
